Plans for 2014

A new year have begun with lots of wargaming opportuneties...

Here follows a short summery of my plans for 2014...we will see if they survive the first encounter with reality...

Kalmar Union War
Of course will I continure my main epic project about the 15th century Swedish civil war in the shadow of the Kalmar Union. Got a bunch om minis already painted, but my lead and plastic pile for this project still have some minis in it, and there will probably be more sins the Perrys have more minis on their way...

Scanian War 1675-79
My latest project, that started as a Skrimish project... really looking forward to try the up comming Donnibrook rules for this. Then it seems like this project might grow from a Skirmish project in to something bigger...we will see how long the inspration last...

Vikings
I have a crave to paint me some new Vikings, haven´t decided for skrimish or multi based yet...

Think it will do with 3 projects for now...

As you know I been involved in the playtesting of Dan Merseys new rules Lion Rampant that are due to be released in September 2014, some month ago Dan reveled the cover picture for me, but I was sworn to secresy untill now:)

I really like the cover art for the Lion Rampant rule book !

    1. Thanks !

Suppouse you refering to Lion Rampant, not a mass battle game even if every thing are possible... but as the rules encourage singel based minis and the movement are very fluid its more a large skirmish game.

Each player leading a Noble with its Host of men. Each host would normaly be made of 4-6 groups of men 12 men for infantry and 6 men for all mounted and all skirmishers.

You can of course find some AAR´s from some of our test games here at my blog;) http://www.dalauppror.blogspot.se/search/label/Lion%20Rampant

      Best regards Michael

    2. So what peride does the book Lion Rampart cover? I am thinking of doing medieval Ireland and have rival lords raiding each other cattle and trying to drive out the Normans/English lords and such.

    3. Would absolutely work. here follows some quotes from the play test rules.

"Welcome to Lion Rampant, a set of easy to learn miniature wargame rules designed
for fighting historical or Hollywood-themed battles in the medieval period, from the
Normans to the end of the Hundred Years War and beyond."

"This period is well suited to big-battle skirmish gaming (involving a few dozen
models per side) as it was a time of anarchy, feuds, robbery, and raiding; although
full-sized battles took place, wars were often ended by siege or diplomacy but small,
desperate actions were fought many times over throughout Europe and the Middle
      East."

  3. As always, promising ventures ahead! Will follow with great interest. The Lion Rampant rules have definitely piqued my interest – might be something for my 2015 wish list – and I'm looking forward to further reports on that topic.

  4. Looks good to me!

Regarding the Vikings – I have an excellent idea for this. At least I think it's excellent. :)

I'll let you know what it is on the next game night ...

  6. A fantastic news that of "Lion Rampart", but I´m in the middle of planning about "Deus Vult"... My interest is piqued really easily!
About your project with Vikings, IMHO, the skirmish level is very good for them, and I recommend you to read "Pig Wars"; a great ruleset with very clear objetives in the game.
So, looking forward to read more about this new rulebook (and change someone of my own project for this year!)

    1. "Deus Vult" are very intersting to me as I haven´t had a chanse to read them yet. "Deus Vult" are more of a Army game and maybe not big skirmish as Lion Rampant are.

As I already run quite a few viking game with singel based minis I leaning forward a more dence shield wall look of this project...at least at the moment...but as you only need a handfull single based minis I suppouse I can do both:)

    2. Yes, "Deus Vult" is for battles with some big units in each side; for that reason, "Lion Rampart" sounds so interesting for me. In fact, I´m thinking about "Lion Rampart" as a better option for my style of game.
About Vikings, I don´t think SAGA is a good option for a "serious" game. It is, IMHO, very limited. As I have said you, "Pig Wars" from Tod Kershners is a good option.

    3. Hi Juan, I´m keen to agree with you about SAGA, it´s absolutely more a Hollywood style game, but that can also be fun from time to time, but not for campaign games.

I just found my copy of "Pig Wars", haven´t read them so I will give them a try.

      Best regards Michael

    1. Considering you stunning Vikings I totaly understand your choice.

But I already been in the SAGA track and the rules are ok but they don´t give me the kind of game I want for campaign gaming, there Dux Brittaniarum are ny number 1, SAGA are my number 1 for one of games at a club night.

What I looking for are the clach of shield walls and I think Dux Britanniarum with multibased minis can give the right feel...just have to paint 300 minis to test:)

At the moment I have no Viking at all... perfect inspiration to visit your blog:)

  11. Looks like a good plan... We will see how long you can follow it... Maybe you can stick to a plan better then me though. hehe

    About the Vikings. Nice.
I would recommend both skirmish and larger battles. If you single base some of them you can always use them on movement trays in larger battles.
Have you read the book "Vikingar i Krig"? all of it I mean, lots of inspiration.

    1. I hope so;)

Vikings at War (Vikingar i Krig) YES indeed, reading it at the moment:) suppouse that might have something to do with my crave for vikings...

It+s very unfortunate that the book haven´t been translated to english yet as it is realy, realy good.

I suppouse the multi and single based minis are a potion but I have a hard time to see single based minis on rectangular bases, need to be round in my opinion on the other hand your multi/singel viking minis look realy good !

  12. The cover looks great! I think for Vikings single figures on sabot bases is the best way to go as they can be used in so many different kind of games.

    1. single figures on sabot bases are absolutely very flexible. But it lack the shieldwall fell that I at least at the moment think I want...

  18. Thanks for a very interesting bloc. I am very inspired to turn my WOTR army in a more scandinavian direction after seeing your Kalmar Union work. Erik of Pommeria also had great fun with the germans in Holstein, so its definitly a period with lots of potential (only what to do with all those long bow men). About your Scanian War project are you familiar with the board game Nothing Gained but Glory? Its a tactical level game that covers all the major battles. Its a great place to look for inspiration as well as ours of fun.

once again thanks for an interesting bloc
    cheers
    Thomas
