Håtunaleken, Lion Rampant, AAR #5

The 5th AAR from our Lion Rampant club project, Håtunleken, Håtuna-Games a Swedish Games of Thrones:)

Both my mateys Ulf and Mark took pictures from this game and you find them at theirs blogs as well as aar´s of the game. Late Night Painting  and   Wargaming I Sverige !

As you all know that King Birgers youngest Brother Valdemar snatched his bride Kristina, the Marsk Torgils Knutssons daughter, and merried her himself...

The absent King made a appearance, but not to fight his rebell brothers as one could expect but to lecture his own bannermens...

By the end of the summer of 1301 several of the Kings loyal bannermen decides to show that they still are a force to be counted on. Under the lead of the Marsk Torgils Knutsson they decide to capture a vital river crossing as well as the right to fish salmon in the river from the Rebell Brothers.

We was using the Hold on Tight scenario (Senario E in the Lion Rampant rules) with the addiation that the Bridge was the main objective earning 2 points if hold and the 2 fords was secondary objectives and earned 1 point each if hold. To hold a objective you needed to have a unit on the oposit side of the river and it would not be battered. The force to accumulate 5 points first would be awarded the victory.

Marsk Torgils and Knight Trolle

Duke Erik and his personal hird

Duke Valdemar and his retinue. Valdemar have by now been renowned to be a dangerous man to meet in single combat...

Poor peasants try to cross the river byt find the way blocked by Marsk Torgils Foot Serjants that was early on formed in to a shield wall...but on the wrong side of the river...

Initial advance by both sides forward the river

Knight Matts Kettilmundsson from the House of Tre Rosor covered the right flak for the Kings force... Knight Matts was a renowned Hero from the Baltic Crusades...

On the opposite side of the river the Judge of Uppland Birger Persson House of Finsta deployed his hoast in support of the Dukes cause. Judge Birger are most know to be the Father of  Saint Birgitta of Sweden

First to seek combat was ofcourse Duke Valdemar that chased the poor peasants of the bridge and charged in to the Shieldwall formed by the Foot Serjants of Marsk Torgils....

At the same time Marsk Torgils and the Trolle foot serjants had advanced to one of the fords...

Marsk Torgils Foot serjants hold the lime repulsong the charge by the Knighs, knowing that if they would retreate the Trolle Knights would  run them over in a headless charge...

The Trolle Foot serjants with Bidowers started to cross the river... Marsk Torgils and old man did not want to get soggy so he decided to stay on dry land...

Fighting by the bridge, at the south ford the Trolle foot serjants have crossed and secure the oposing beach and ford... At the north ford the soldiers from the House of Finsta and Tre Rosor just lurking heroic in the cover of the forest...

Just as the Trolle foot serjants had crossed the river they was under heavy attack by Duke Erik

The Trolle foot serjants had to run for it...

By the bridge Trolle him self had decided it was wise to invite Duke Valdemar for personal combat...

The duel ended in a drew and both Duke Valdemar and Trolle returned to their units...

At the north ford they still just lurking around... no heroic deeds what so ever...

As Duke Valdemar unit was depleted the marsk foot serjants rallied the currage to attack him... they even managed to capture Duke Valdemar ! Glory to the brave !!!

Encouraged by the deed of his foot serjants Marsk Torgils decided to advance against Duke Erik that was crossing the southern ford...

By the bridge the remaining part of Duke Valdemars hosta had decided to try to recapture their leader...

At the southern ford Marsk Torgils and Duke Erik was involved in fierce fighting...

Losses on both sides, but the attacker Marsk Torgils had to retreat...

The Trolle Knights notice that Duke Erik was within reach and left their guard duty by the bridge starting to move to the southern ford...

At the same time something at last took place on the north side of the bridge, the Crusading hero Matts Kettilmundsson from the House of Tre Rosor decided to challange Judge Birger Persson from the House of Finsta on a duel in the middle of the river... unfortunate for both heros the stream was to stron so they had to abort the duel...

Also at the north fort a duel took place betveen Duke Erik and Marsk Torgils...

During the duel Marsk Torgils sprain an ankle on a slippery stone and had to leave the battle field...

By some skirmish arrows Duke Erik lost all his Hird and the Marsks men-at-arms thought it was a good time to chase him of the fields of battle...

The Trolle Knights really wanted to fight, so they decided it was a good ideea to charge some of Duke Erik´s Foot Serjants ...

At the bridge Duke Valdemars men-at-arms had crossed the bridge and engaged the Foot Serjants guarding it... trying to rescire the captured Duke Valdemar...

The Marsk´f foot serjants had to retreat and give room for the charging Knights... at the same time there was full fight in the northern part of the river...

Once again it was single combat between Crusading hero Matts Kettilmundsson from the House of Tre Rosor and Judge Birger Persson from the House of Finsta...

This time the Crusading hero Matts Kettilmundsson was wounded and fell in to the whater and was only saved from a certain death by the stron stream that pulled him away from the Judge Birger...

As it seems the foot men-at-arms of Marsk Torgils had secured the southern ford...
and the Trolle Knights was on their way to secure the bridge after they had broken Duke Erik´s foot serjants...

Trolle knights was undecisive...bridge...or northern ford...

...but they was helped in their decision by Judge Birger that claimed he was in charge of the bridge...

... the Trolle Knights could not stand the bragging Judge and charged him down... had to cut that picture out...to much blood...

With the Judge Birger out of the way the Rebells didn´t have any leaders left and not much troop either so they decided to save what was left for comming battles...

Victory for the true King !!!

Really entertaining battle, work fine with 6 players but i think 4 is optimale, more games in our Håtunagames club campaign will come :)

Regarding Sörens house with the headles troll in the CoA, the house of Trolle are one of the oldest one.

    1. Indeed it would have been nice if the King himself could have participated and not just let his bannermen do the dirty work... ;)
