Early Medieval Swedes

As I show you some days ago I have started to paint some early medieval Swedes 12th and 13th century for some Swedish Crusades and a still secret project...

Here are some pictures of the first 2 groups of 12 minis painted up. I have used the 1-2-3 basing as i really like it and I think it look good! they also work well with my prefered medieval rules, Lion Rampant.

The minis are all plastic and a kit-basch of Fire Forge Foot Sergeants and Gripping Beast Vikings and Dark Age Warriors. EDIT: the Archer arms are from the plastic Perry Bows and Bill box.

  1. Hi,
Lovely figures again. I do admire your work.
Could you explain the 1 - 2 - 3 a bit more, please? Advantages, size of bases, and the like? It isn't something I am familiar with and I am ever eager to learn :0) Cheers

    1. Maybe in the UK but not in Sweden matey, still to much Viking influensenses here, and the Viking era dosen't count as medieval Times in swedish history Books ;)

    2. Sure, but those Nordic historians I've met follow the formula that the Viking era was part of the Early Middle Ages at international conferences, even those held in Scandinavia, and that the Crusades started in the High Middle Ages. Still, what's it matter here. :-)

  12. Good chose of plastic boxes, its always nice that you can mix them up.... great work.

  13. They are some nice really Allmoge troops, a bit lacking in the crossbow department tough. :D Maybe you could mix in Perry 100 years War Archers and Conquest Games Normans as well? (Altough the later ones have wierd necks and haircuts...)

    1. Thanks, i would prefere them to be called Ledung troops as they are due to service outside the realm, but they are indeed from the allmoge;)

As these ledung troops represent 12th and 13yh century the use of crossbows in Sweden wasn't that big, wasn't until the 15th century that the crossbow seems to have started to be a common weapon amongst the swedeish allmoge. Before that time the bow was mainstream used, for example in a darlecarlian seal from 1434 there are a bow and an axe, not the later use crossbowbolts that dalecarlia is famous for.

The Perry HYW archers might work, but i decided not to as the plastic part dosen't mix as well with the GB and FF ones, the same gors for the Conquest ones, strange ways of attaching the head and arms.

  14. Speaking of the Landskap and Härad seals, could they be used for inspiration for generic allmoge/ledung banners? (Of course together with striped and/or crossed banners and saintly banners.)

    1. Tack ! thanks in Swedish :)

Not really sure what minis you are refering to but is it the ones with winter/snow bases that I painted in black and red? If so it is mostly Gripping Beast from their Jomsviking range, mixed up with all kind of Viking minis I had at home when painting them.
