After almost two years of work it is at last time for the official release day of my and Dan Mersays Pike and Shot wargaming rules, The Pikeman´s Lament, that of course are published by Osprey.

Thank you very much for all that have supported this project and now eagerly are waiting for their copies to arrive. I really hope that we will see a lot of Pike and Shot games and AAR´s around the blogsphere during the comming month.

Also a big thank you to all that helped us out with pictures of lovely painted minis, our greate playtesters, Phil at Osprey and a special thanks from me to Dan for giving me the trust to rework his exellent Lion Rampant rules to the Pike and Shot era.

Happy Gaming !!!

  9. Got my copy yesterday and its an excellent follow on to Lion and Dragon Rampant. The campaign system is excellent and should adapt to those rule sets fairly well. I have one minor "quibble" the same one I have with Lion and Dragon Rampant the lack of rules for units being attacked in the flank or rear. I also have one request. I would have liked to see some sample armies for the Spanish and for the Turks.

    1. You might want to look here. As I understand these are suggestions from Dan Mersey on flanks/rear in Lion Rampant that you might want to try.

    2. Thanks Adam

The flank and resår rules was actually in Lion Rampant as an additinals rule but was cut to save space and Also as it didn't feel nesesary to have one, just made the gaming take longer time, so we didn't even considered to Included one in The Pikeman,s Lament either.

Please check the Link My matey Mattias provided or you just use the same rule we use when we game with multibased minis in lathet units.

All units have to designats a front, having in that direktion. If any enemy unit starts an attack move beond the target units 180 degree front then the Target unit becomes Wavering//Battered before any attack/defence dice are rolled i.e. The unit attacker in flank or test Will only hit on 6's. Used it in TPL and LR.

All the sample Companies in the rules are for designats battles, so wich battles//years do you need sample Companies for the Spanish and the Turks/Ottomans?

    3. I did not have a specific battle in mind but they seemed like the two major "European" combatants from the period that didn't seem to be covered and I was surprised at the omission

    4. Omission... ? Not sure what that mean.

Tha sample companies that are Included in the rules are by no mean sampels of generic national forces as they ar designed as examples of different ways to field your company. Was me deciding what to Included and as a Swede i choose to Included several examples with Swedis connection as well as o choose to Include several for the ECW as i know that is a popular Conflict to game. I would liked to Include several more but as the book have limited space cut had to be done... Even the QRS had to be left out...

I be glad to come up with some sampels for Spanish and Ottomans if i know what action you vant to use as inspiration for your companies.

    5. Clearly I misunderstood I thought you where providing generic national forces. I'm new to the period... and such examples would be helpful.

    6. I really can't do that as a national generic force would not be representera in an company sized force, if you really should push it I suppouse all units should be of the same unit type, but as that might not give quite one sides game for you to play.

A generic pike and shot company that gives you a good game would be to build the Samåle company that Dan made, Reynolds Regimente at Fotte page 12 in the rules, I would say that company compossition would work in the TYW, ECW and later to

  13. Congratulations on the relase.

Now it's only to wait for Warlord to re-release Warames Factory's old "Scanian War" box sets and find someone who makes 28mm kapurs-wearing heads. (Maybe Russian heads in ushankas could work as a substitute?)

  21. Not sure if there's a rules forum, so posting here. I'm a little concerned that the 1" 3" zoc mechanic may be a little broken if the player is not using the 3:2:1 basing.

So, My opponent set up his pike block in a 4" wide column, flanked by two columns of shot each about 1.5" wide 1" away.Inspired by history, but it means you cannot legally attack any of these units to the front.
Taking this to the logical conclusion, imagine an army of 2 units of veteran shot, 3 units of regular shot. each set up in a column of 6 deep by two wide, One inch apart. General unit in the middle so that all units are in command. Vets on the flanks. With the units on 25mm bases, none of these units may be legally attacked in melee.

I don't mean to sound negative, I did enjoy my game last night and am looking forward to more.

  22. Is there a forum somewhere for rules queries? Some things have come up in our playing that seem like we may be misinterpreting the intent of the rules. Particularly around ZOC and how you can't come within 3" of a unit that you're not attacking. This allows you to set up in a way where there are no legal targets to attack because each unit is within 3" of another.

This might sound a bit artifical but happened in a game with pike flanking shot on narrow bases deployed in deep ranks.

  23. @krussia and Jonathan Smith

Please ask the moderator at the Dux Rampant forum for a sektion for The Pikemans Lament or start up a Rule Question Threand for TPL in General Wargaming Section at that Forum.

I will not have the possibility to answer any rule questions here at my blog as they won´t be "official" and I also have to run them throught Dan before we answer.

  24. Thanks, I've posted my question in the general wargaming section there. Looking forward to your answer :)
