This will be 2 short AAR of the latest battles in our SAGA Campaingn, game #8 and #9

Last time a large norman force defeated a allied Viking/Anglo-Danish force. The Norman have now split their force in two to be able to pursue both the Vikings and the Anglo-Danes...They shoulden´t have...

Game #8 Normans vs. Vikings (Sacred Ground Scenario)

The Normans under command of Comes Rollo catched up Jarl Eiriks warband of Vikings by the coast, just as they was going to move for easyer prey... BUT then the incautious Normans appered the Vikings decided to give battle...

Jarle Eirik deployed most of he´s warband in 2 large groups, one Bondi and one Hirdmen, keeping only the Berserkers and a small group of Bondis as reserve...

Comes Rollo immediately discovered that the Vikings left flank would be vulnerable and sent 2 units to flank the Viking line...

Jarl Eirik was eager to get hold of the good ground and ruched he´s warband forward...

On the Vikings Right flank the large groupe of Bondis captured the wood and intimidate the Norman Sergenats...

The main struggle was around the central hill...The Viking Hirdmen first captured the high ground but was soon sweept away by the Norman Flanking force...

In a fierce Battle Jarl Eirik and the berserkers fighted their way to the top of the hill...There they found Comes Rollo in a exposed situation...the berserkers slaughtered him:)

By the loss of their Warlord the Normans didn´t have much to put up and regarded the battle as lost...retreating from the field...

Game #9 Normans vs. Anglo-Danish (Clach of Warlords Scenario)

Duc Willhelm and hi´s Normans chose to follow the retreating force of Earl Edward "the Doubtful". The mounted Normans soon got up to the retreating Anglo-Danes...Earl Edward was forced to give battle...

Earl Edward decided to try out a new approach and deploy hes warband in a extreamly defensive position and divide he´s warband in several very small groups...he might not do that again...

Duc Willhelm used a more direct tactic...

Although the Normans planed to get in there and fight it out it took them a very long time to get there...hinder by Anglo-Danish intimidation and Trapped...

Finally they managed to get a unit of Knights in combat with the screaning Geburs...

The levy archers put up a real fight, supported by some SAGA abillitys they managed to survive, at least a few of them...

The exhausted Norman Knights retreated and two of them fell from their saddles... thanks to the Anglo-Danish Exhaustion Abillity :)

In the center a group of Mounted Norman Sergeants started to harass the Anglo-Danish Ceorls...

The Normans continued to press the Anglo-Danes hard but losing even more Knights to the Exhaustion...

By night fall the 2 forces both withdrew but it was still a minor victory for the Normans...

Anglo-Danish Housecarls #2

Anglo-Danish Housecarls #1

Earl Ethelstone will have 3 points/12 minis of Housecarls all will be armed with large Daneaxes, don´t know if that is good but it is cooool;)

In our games the Housecarls with Daneaxes have turned out to be quite fragile, with their lower armour, but they can deal quite some damage to:)

The minis are from left; Musketeer (Early Saxon range), Perry (Crusader range), and 2 Gripping Beast (plastic Saxon/Viking mix)

Blood Reavers #2

As I started to work on my Anglo-Danish SAGA warband I tougth it would be ready in a week or two...

But as Jarl Eirik realy needed some ships to get around the British coast and my "friend" Ogge lured me in to paint some 40K minis the Earl Ethelstone and he´s warband have been delayd...

At last have I finished Earl Ethelstone and he´s warband will muster up during the next 2 weeks...I hope...

Earl Ethelstone will be fielded as a Anglo-Danish force to start with but will probably double up as Saxons warband to...but with a new flag...

The minis are frome the lovely Griping Beast Penda Vignette but I gave him a realy ax and a new Housecarl to carry he´s banner...that mini are from the Perrys crusader range...

Northern Wargaming

I got tiped about a new Swedish Wargaming Blog (in english) Northern Wargaming

The best about it at the moment are that they have a realy nice AAR of a 15th century Kalmar Union War game:)

It´s a skirmish game using the LOTR rules, please have a look.

This was perfect inspiration for me to continue my own Kalmar Union War project:)

SAGA Campaingn game #7

Our 7th SAGA Campaingn game was large game with two 4 point warband on each side, Viking and Anglo-Danish against a double Norman warband....on our usual 120x120cm table...

The Norman Duc Willheln and Comes Rollo had gathered a large Norman force to advance North from Sussex in to the land that the Viking recently had conquer.

Jarl Eirik gathered he´s warband and summon he´s loyal? subject Earl Edward "the Doubtful"...

The Normans deployed in two separted flanks both with a mix of Knights and Shooters...

Jarl Eirik deployed as he used in a shieldwall and demanded that Earl Edward would do the same and send he´s archers to protect the right flank. Jarl Eiriks plan was so simple that even Earl Edward had to understand it...

Hold your position and let the Anglo-Danish Trapped and Intimidation abillitys work during the Norman advance, and then make some swift double or even tripple moves, strike hard, retreat and regroup for a new lighting attack...

As plan the Norman started to advance but the Normans infront of the Anglo-Danish Archers seemed intimidated and didn´t dare to close in to much...

The Viking did hold their possitions, so did the Anglo-Danish levys, I suppouse they didn´t dare to do else...

BUT the Housecarls and Earl Edward started to advance in to the forest...Jarle Eirik was furious!

The Norman crossbows made a swift advance to get in range...what they didn´t expect was the long lightning charge made by a large group of Bondis that reached them and slaughtered them all:)

Some of the Andlo-Danish Housecarls moved out of the forest besides the Victorious Bondis and started to talked about supporting them...

BUT the Normans did exploit their mistake and slaugther them with a group of Mounted Sergeants...

Jarl Eirik took advance of the incautious attack by the Norman and attacked the Norman Sergeantes and the Knights giving them both a real spanking;) Comes Rollo started to withdraw what was left of he´s warband... Jarl Eirik smelled Victory !

BUT at the same time Earl Edward and he´s remaning Housecarls had forced their way through the forest and engaged the Norman sergeantes in the field...and was beaten...retreating back to the forest...

The Anglo-Danish levy still protected the left flank, intimidating the Normans not to advance...

Jarl Eirik started to move he´s warband to help Earl Edward and just mop up what was left of the Normans...

Earl Edward still wanted to be the hero of the day...so he ordered he´s last Housecarls to charge the Norman Sergeantes in the field a nother time...so they did leave the Earls side and chased the Sergeantes from the field...

A groupe of Norman Knights noticed Earl Edvards Exposed situation and charged him right away...Earl Edward was slain and severely injured during the fight bit some loyal retuiners managed to get him of the field of battle...

By night fall all Anglo-Danish warriors had fleed the field, The Vikings had been in hard fights but haden´t suffered to many losses...BUT was forced to withdrav from the battle field then their right flank was exposed due to the Earls defeate...

The Norman claimed the victory ! (22 VP to 21 VP)

This was a realy close and good fight! The gaming table should have been 180cm wide but other wise all worked out well.

Both warbands on each side rolled SAGA-dice and activated at the same time, which gave some extra possibilitys in the use of the battle boards.

Blood Reavers

After several month of brainwash I maight have given in...to paint me some 40K minis...

My friend? Ogge started to paint a Tau army last September and haven´t spoken of anything else, every time we talk he rave about 40K and that I realy, realy, realy need a 40K army to...

I have stoicly recisted untill last week then I started to go through my old warhammer bit boxes seeking stuff to use for a Chaos Space Marine army...

I decided to go for Chaos Space Marines as I got lots of bits that I can use to hold down the cost and there will be a quite small army.

Hopefully it will be finished in no time, so I can go back to SAGA and my 15th centery project...

Here are a VIP picture of the first minis I put together...

My army will be Blood Reavers i.e. Red Corsairs under command of the infamous Huron Blackheart.

But I don´t like the Huron Blackheart minis... so my army will be Huron Blackheart have done "good" work for the Chaos Gods and been rewarded and achieve Deamonhood and become a deamon Prince:)

SAGA Campaingn game #6

This was our first 6 point game, between Jarl Eirik and hes nemisis Earl Edward up in the northern part of Essex.

We used the Sacred ground scenario, there you get victory points by the end of each enemy turn for every own warband member that are in any of the 3 terrain piece...

Jarl Eirik had rowed up a small river to attack Earl Edwards land, ofcours was the Earl alerted and he gathered a Warband to meet the Vikings on the field of battle...

The Vikings disembarked their Long Ships and waded ashore, confident of victory as the Earl had been beaten by them twice in the past...

Jarl Eirik deployed he´s warband in a shieldwall with he´s best fighters on the left aiming to seize the forest to the left and the Hill in the center of the field, but ignore the marsh to the right, at least to start with...

As usual Earl Edward "the Doubtful" scattered he´s warband all around with no cleare intention...or did he cunningly hide he´s real plan...

Jarl Eirik immediately took the initiativ and saw a opportunety to get a advanatage... With the help of Njord he managed to ruch he´s warband and claim the Forest to the left and the Hill in the center without he´s warriors get to wear out...

The Anglo-Danish apperently was chocked by the swift Viking advance as they started to warily move an mass...

The Large group of Anglo-Danish Housecarls with Daneaxes had just made their first move towards the hill, with the clear intention to attack the Viking Bondis uponit...BUT...Jarl Eirik had other plans for them...

As lightning from a clear sky the Berserkers made al realy long move and charged the Housecarls and started to slaugther them...after a round of combat, 6 Housecarls was slain and only 2 of the berserkers:)

Earl Edward "the Doubtful" coulden´t belive he´s eyes then he saw the 2 remaining Housecarls run for their lifes...

How was it possible for the Berserkers to make 3 moves and still not let the opponent get any fatigue to exploit...

The battle board was loaded with good stuff... Njord to remowe the fatigue they got after their 2nd activation...Frigg to to remowe the fatigue they got after their 3rd activation and Ullr to get re-rolls on the 17 attack dice...

...and as the Berserkers attacked them in the "side" not even all of the Houscarls could contribute to the fighting...but they can still be slain;)

After the loss of the main part of he´s Houscarls Earl Edward "the Doubtful" lost some of he´s fighting spirit...But he tryed to repaire the damage by sending he´s remaining 2 small groups of Housecarls forward...

The Housecarls on the Anglo-Danish Right flank meet up with 2 groups with 6 Hirdmen...the Housecarls put up a stoic fight forcing the Hirdmen to withdraw...

The Anglo-Danish levy had tryed to chase away the Bondis on the hill with archery but to no vain... so the Earl sent them forward to support the Houscarl attack and at least claime some victory of the hill...

As usual Earl Edward "the Doubtful" wanted to lead the last desperate attack from the front...

The Earl and he´s last Houscarls cleared the hill from Viking Bondis...but to the cost of all Housecarls...

The Earl was all alone on the hilltop waiting for the Viking vengeance...

Supported by a singel Hirdmen and a loaded battleboard Jarl Eirik Charged the hillside and engaged Earl Edward in a last struggle...

Jarle Eirik had defeated Earl Edward "the Doubtful" in personal combat before...and this time was no exception...

Once again Jarl Eirik spared the earls life and demanded him to take an oath of support in the upcoming battle with a large Norman Force...But that is another story...

This was a realy nice game, as Lasse starts to learn to use the battleboard in a very good way for him...not for me;)

The game was realy over by turn 3 as the main objective was to claim Victory points by havin warriors in the terrain areas.

I managed to get several of them in there in turm one which gtranted me about 10 VP in the end of every Anglo-danish turn...

So by turn 3 I had 30 VP and the Anglo-Danish 0 VP...and Lasse also got he´s best Housecarls obliterated by the mighty Berserkers:)

Viking Ships

My first post for 2012 will be a picture of my finished Viking Ships for my SAGA Warlord Jarl Eirik:)

With some micromanagement I can get about 12 minis on each ship without the 30mm bases overlap...so now Jarl Eirik can bring he´s warband out for some strandhugg along the british coast;)

Last post for this year, more from me next year...

My wargaming plans for next year...

* Try to get to Salute for the first time in my life...

* Continue my 28mm, 15th centery Kalmar Union War Project...

* Might try to restart my AWI project to...was along time sins I played Black Powder...

* Might get some time over to play some WW2 games, want to try out kampfgruppe Normandy at least once...not sure about painting any ww2 minis, but you never know...

* Ofcourse continue with SAGA, first complete my 3 Viking ships and my Anglo-Danish warband...

Untill next year here are a AAR from our SAGA Campaing Game #5...

Once again a fight between Lasse and his 4-point Warband of Anglo-Danes under command of Earl Edward and Uffe with 4 points of my Vikings under command of Jarl Eirik...

Jarl Eirik claimed Earl Edward as a prisoner after their last fight, planing to demand a good ransom for him...

During the Victory feast Earl Edward managed to escap thanks to some traitorus saxons...as soon as Jarl Eirik discovered it he gathered a force of his best hirdmen and started to follow the fleeing Earl further north in Essex...

At a small river the Earl meet a group of his follower that was planing a rescue action, they immediately prepered to engage the Viking pursuers...

Both warlords had got some more experience...

Earl Edward gathered all he´s Housecarls in one unit that would attack over the Ford as the Ceorls and Geburs would watch the bridge...

Jarl Eirik dispatch half of he´s Hirdmen to protect the Ford as he, the rest of his Hirdmen and the berserkers would attack over the bridge...

The unfortunate sheepherd Scur just passed by with his new heard of sheeps...

Up at the Ford both the Anglo-Danish and the Vikings rushed forward, but non oth them daring to start crossing the Ford...

At the bridge the Viking Hirdmen started the advance, geting good cover of the stone bridge against the Anglo-Danish archery...

Standoff at the ford...

At the bridge Jarl Eirik decide to go for a quick victory, and sends his Hirdmen to settle things with the Ceorls...

After a hard fight the Ceorls retreated leaving 3 slain Hirdmen behind...but with some help from Loki the 3 remaning Ceorls wasen´t a problem any more:)

The Geburs trying to shoot the Berserkers...but all in vain thanks to the bridge...

Jarl Eirik let´s hes Hirdmen continue to clear the are around the bridge by sending his Hirdmen to chase the Archers of...

At the Ford Earl Edward started to run out of time and decided to send his best men over the Ford...

The Houscarls was repelled and had to move back... as Earl Edward knew he was out of time and men he chose to retreat from the battle field...

Another glorious Viking Victory:)

This was a good game and both Lasse and Uffe had started to get a gripp of the battleboard, but Uffe managed to get most out of it this time, especially by using deffensive abilitys against the archery...

Next time wee have to try out some new scenarios...Escort and Defending the settlement...

SAGA Campaingn game #4

Yesterday I had the opportunety to introduce 2 new players to SAGA and continue our SAGA campaign.

Lasse had painted up a nice 4-point Warband of Anglo-Danes under command of Earl Edward. Uffe borrow 4 points of my Vikings under command of Jarl Eirik...

After a unconclusive fight with the Normans in Kent, Jarl Eirik thought there was easier pray along the river Thames...

The newly appointed Earl Edward gathered he´s small Anglo-Danish warband to meet the Viking threat...

Just as Jarl Eirik and he´s hungry warriors would start a blowout of the poor sheepherd Scur´s sheeps, Earl Edward arrived to save the day...

Both warbands lined up for a fight...

Earl Edward right away showed he´s inexperience by filed he´s warband in a very disperse formation...or was it a cunning plan...

Jarl Eirik arranged he´s warriors in a more shield wall like formation with he´s flanks protected by a stone wall and a forest...

One again Earl Edward made a move that helped the enemy...by moving he´s warband closer to them...instead of let he´s fatigue SAGA abilitys make some work for him...

Jarl Eirik exploit the opportunity and sends he´s Hirdmen to slaughter the poor Bow armed Geburs...

The Geburs put up a real fight and manages to slay 3 of the Hirdmen to the cost of 8 Gerubs...they retreat...

At the same time, charges Earl Edward supported by he´s Ceorls one of the Bondi units...AND one of the Housecarl units charges the other Bondi unit that have been hiding in the forests...

Conclution...focus on one fight each turn... Boths Bondi unit put up a real fight slaying all Houscarls and several of the Ceorls...

The Viking follow-up theirs victorys by sending the Bondis in to the remains of the Ceorls that didn´t get help from Earl Edward this time...

The Bearserkers ruched forward and engaded the second Houscarl unit...it become a blodbath...just leaving one of the Bersergkers standing in the end...

Earl Edward started to look rather desperat as most of he´s warband had been slain...just some Geburs left...and they dosen´t realy count...

Earl Edward decided to chalange Jarl Eirik on personal combat...so he charged the Viking worlord...just to find himself on the ground with a furious viking demanding he´s surrender...

Jarl Eirik raised he´s ax in the sky signaling he´s victory...and that the blowout of the poor sheepherd Scur´s sheeps could start...

Both players seen to like SAGA as they at once wanted to play one more game:)

Here in Sweden the children get their gifts on christmas eve, so they already got some and will get more in the aftternoon then santa are comming...

Daddy got a gift already to... Kampfgruppe Normandy from Warhammer historical...I must have been nice this year:)

Might have to paint and play some ww2 in 2012... don´t know if I have the time, but the rulebook realy gives some inspiration...

Viking sails

I have started to make me some sails for Jarl Eiriks three viking ships... The work to paint the ships continue but the workers will have a short brake during the Midvinteblot...Christmas I mean ;)

Viking Ships

Now then Jarl Eirik have a nice tent he just have to get some ships for he´s warband to use then they are out for a Strandhugg along the British shores...

I found the 3 ship hulls in a bargin-box at one of the local game stores here in Stockholm, got them all 3 for just 60SEK/€6,5/$9.5/£5,5 a real bargin :)

I have made some extra balsa bits and they are ready for painting...

SAGA Campaing game #3

Last monday we continued our SAGA campaing with the 3rd game...Using 4 point warbands and trying out missile troops for the first time:)

Jarl Eirik and he´s loyal follower had gone for a Strandhugg at the Northen coast of Kent, that was in the possesions of the Normans...

jarl Eirik and hes Viking Warband had just set their camp then a Norman battle force approched under command of the notorius Duc Willhelm (not the King this time eiter...)

As this was at the Viking camp Jarl Eirik sent out he´s Levys to protect the left flank keping he´s Hird and Bondis in the center and having the Bearserkers as a reserv on the right flank...

Duc Willhelm sent some sergeants to hide behind a stone wall and to cover the left flank, In the center he had 2 units of Sergeants one mounted and one with crossbows... and on he´s right a small unit of knights as a mobile reserv and flanking force...

Jarl Eirik started to order he´s Levys to advance towards the field to get some protection, but they dident make it all the way...and got caught by the Norman Knights in the Open...not so nice for them...

The Levy of course lost the combat and the survivors started to run against their comrades in the canter...

Only to be charged a nother time by the Norman Mounted Sergeants...

This time non of them survived...

Not the best start for Jarl Eirik...

Infatuated by he´s victorys Duc Willhelm ordered he´s Knights to engage the Viking Bondis...without taking a glimpse at the Viking Battleboard...that was loaded with combat abilities...

It become a fierce combat with lots of casualtys on both sides, 3 Norman Knights fell for the Bondis, but alsoe 5 of the Bondis got the opportunity to travel to Valhall... The Bondis withdraw closer to the camp...

Jarl Eirik one again loaded the Viking battle board with combat abilities and sent in he´s Hirdmen, that the Norman belived was out of range, BUT with a double move they caught the Norman mounted Sergeants ofguard:)

Thanks to THOR there was 2 rounds of melee and after the 2nd round all 8 Normans was slain to the cost of 2 Hirdmen...

Even the Berserkes that had been lurking in the wood eating toadstools started to move...

The Viking Hirdmen continued their move and engaged the Crossbow armed Sergeants to...

In the upcomming melee they managed to slay 6 ot them only reciving 2 hits that HAD to be saved on 5 or 6´s...

Rolling a 5 and a 6 meant that they could continue their heroic actions...

The sun started to fade away and the darkness would soon end the combat...

In an desperat last move, to even the numbers, Duc Willhelm with the two remaining Sergeants assaulted the two blood soaked Hirdmen...

DEA AIE can make a big differense...the the Viking Hirdmen died...so did alsoe the Norman Sergeantes ...leaving only Duc Willhelm to raise his sword in the sky and salute Jarl Eirik for a good but undecided combat...

Normans gained 12 VP and the Vikings also gained 12 VP, meaning thet none could claim any campaign territorys.

This was a realy nice fight, giving us a chanse to use our shooters for the first time, neither of us handled then very well, but we will learn...specially the Norman need to learn as shooters seem essential for them to get out most of their warbands...

Anglo-Danes

I have started on my second warband for SAGA, it will be a Anglo-Danish one...under command of Earl Ethelstone...

In total 39 minis

The minis I will use are what I could found at home...most will be a mix of Gripping Beast plastic Saxons and Vikings, but I alsoe use some Perry crusader and other odd minis I found in my boxes...

The only mini I bought peculiarly for this warband are the Warlord, Earl Ethelstone...I used the very cool GB King Penda viginette, might be a couple of hundred years to early, but I don´t really care as the mini are so cool I just had to have it:)

Viking tent

Jarl Eirik are so happy for he´s new tent :)

Now he won´t have to sleep in the open during he´s 1067 tour of Britain ;)

The tent are a 15mm viking tent from Baueda, it is of the same size as the Rendera plastic ones. I just added a 28mm Shield to cover the 15mm one...

Early Imperial Roman

The last month I have spent most of my painting time on a commission painting, a 15mm EIR army. I don´t use to accept commission jobbs, but sins it was a club member, I reconsidered.

I probably won´t do it again, if it isn´t realy something I feel inspired to paint, at the moment I don´t like to paint 15mm minis... I had rather painted 28mm EIR:)

Anyway, I´m finished so here are a picture...and now I will be over to painting some Anglo-Danish for SAGA:)

SAGA Campaign game 2

Our second Camapign game took place in the south, the Norman Duc Willian (no, not the one that have become King, just a close relative to the King...) was trying to expend he´s territory and subdue the local Anglo-Saxon Earl Leofric...

We used the river crosing scenario, at the moment my favorite SAGA scenario, but we haven´t tryed the Escort one yet...

The 2 Warbands had meet at a small river with only 2 passages, a Bridge and a Ford. Duc William made a immediate mistace by dividing he´s force in 2 quite equale parts...

Earl Leofric was a more wise leader by concentrating he´s warband at the Bridge and only using a small unit of Ceorls covering the Ford well hidden in a small forest...

Leading from the front Duc William advansed to the Ford and started to wade the river with his Knights. At the same time at the Bridge he´s other knights made swift move up un the bridge closley followed by a group of Sergeants.

Earl Leofric commanded he´s Housecarls...the ones with the Daneaxes to meet the Notman threat and clear the way over the bridge...

Like choping wood the Daneaxes took it´s toll...

Andy that play with the Anglo-Danish have realy learnd to use the Battleboard options and the enemys fatigue to get most out of he´s warband, the DaneAxe armed Houscarls that in he´s earlier games died in their first fight now managed to survive 3 fights!

...and the housecarls realy cleared the bride...and Earl leofric lead his men over to the other side...

While Duc William tryed to clear the forest from Anglo-Danish resistance, Earl Lofric and he´s warband started to sweep up the last Norman Knights and Sergeantes at the Bridge...

Duc William had lost precious time in the Forest, but was now trying to save the day by ruching forward the Bridge to try to catch some of the Anglo-Danish...

They tryed in vain as Earl Leofric moved all he´s warband away from the bridge and was saved by the dusk, and as the sun faded away you could hear the Norman lamentation...

Anglo-Danish Victory ! (Anglo-Danish 10 VP and Norman 7 VP)

The Anglo-Danes are realy on the move both up in the North against the Vikings and donw in the South against the Normans...

The Anglo-Danish Earls Godwin and Leofric (must be reltives as the look quite a like...) have realy shown that tha Anglo-Danes not have given up their causes...

SAGA Campaing Game 1

Last Monday did we start up our Saga Campaign in a small scale, 2 games was played using 4 point warbands.

Firsts we had a clash up in the north between Jarl Eirik and hes followers and Earl Godwin that had gathered new troops sins he´s last defeat, and he was out for revange...

White - Viking - V
Green - Anglo-Danish - AD
Blue – Norman - N
Yellow – Welsh - W

The 2 Warbands had encountered eachother near a Saxon settlement that Jarl Eirik tought was a good catch.

BUT he haden´t expected to find Earl Godwin in the area with he´s newly assembled warband...

Jarl Eirik took the initiative and sent he´s Berserkers around the field for a flank attack...as he adwanced with he´s Hird towards a awaiting Anglo-Danish force...

The berserkers soon run in to a buch of Anglo-Danish Ceorls it become a har fight with several casualtys on both sides, the remaning Ceorls run to and hided behind some Houscarls... Smells like Viking Victory:)

The Anglo-Danish was still awaiting in fear behind their shields...as the 2 remaining Berserks ruched forward the Housecarls...slaying 2 of them before the Valkyries helped them to Valhal...

The 3 remaning Ceorls allso run away then Jarl Eirik used the Loki ability:)

Now Earl Godwin thought it was a good time to join the battle with he´s main force, they all made a swift advance against the Jarl Eiriks Hird...

It turned out to be a real slaughter, you realy don´t wan´t to be in the way for the Dane Axes...

Then the sun started to fade away both sides thougt it was best not to continue the fight...It had been a even fight, but as the Anglo-Danes had some more men standing they claimed the Victory...

It was a realy good, tense and interesting game that started out quite good for the Vikings but with good use of the fatigue giving abilities ended with a minor Anglo-Danish victory (Anglo-Danish 12 VP, Vikings 11 VP)

SAGA Campaign - Summer of -67

I have decided to start up a small SAGA Campaign at our club...with primary goal to lure more members in to get SAGA warbands;)

At first it will only be a measurement of which fraction are on topp at the moment, and we see how it develop from there...

Summer of -67

Our SAGA-Campaign is set to start in the early summer of 1067.

Last Autum two large battles was staged first did Harold Godwinson and he´s Anglo-Danish army win over Harald Hardrade and he´s Viking army at Stamford bridge.

Then Harold Godwinson and he´s Anglo-Danish army force marched south to meet the Norman invasion by William of Normandy and he´s Norman army…as you all know the Anglo-Danes lost the battle…

Now it is the late spring of 1067 and the battle of Britain can begin…

King William is trying to consolidate he´s positions and conquer the rest of Britain.

There are still plenty of Anglo-Danish Earls that try to put up some opposition and Viking forces that roaming the costs, even the Welsh start to take advantage of the situation.

It would take about 10 years before the Normans could claim some kind of total victory of Britain…

Each fraction have 8 territorys at start, the winner in a game can clain one of the loosers territorys.

SAGA AAR: Bridge over troubled water...

Here comes a AAR of our latest SAGA Song, we call it Bridge over troubled water;)

We used the River crosing scenario and 4 point armys on 120x120 gaming board. Andy playing with he´s Anglo-Danish warband under command of Earl Godwin and I played with my Viking ravageners under command of Jarl Eirik Gunnarsson.

The scenario in short...a river divides the gaming area it is only forable at the bridge and the ford. The side that managed to get most of he´s men over to the enemy side wins the day...

Set up... Jarl Eirik had a cunning plan...He would send hes Berserkers to block the bridge and concentrate the rest of he´s warband at the Ford... simple and brilliant he tought...

Earl Godwin had a more divided approach to the problem and split he´s warband in 2 equal parts and deployed on at the Bridge and one at the Ford...

The SAGA could begin...

It all started by the toadstool eating Berserkers that made a rush for the bridge...and acumulated a Fatigue point... (the small naked man with blood on him...)

Earl Godwin apperently was stunned by their swift advance as he diden´t have he´s warband to do much more then sending he´s Huscarls forward to block the Ford...

In the exitment I forgot to take some photos... Here are one from turn 3... The Anglo-Danish Huscarls had tryed to block the Ford...in repons Jarl Eirik sent he´s Hirdmen forward to clear the passage over the Ford...

By some briliant combination on the battleboard, The Ullr abilitie are a real favorite, giving you re-rolls on all missed attacks:), and good dice rolling the Viking Hirdmen managed to slay all four of the Huscarls only losing only one hirdman, but they were exhausted by wadeing the river and the fight...

The exhausted hirdmen were a easy victim for a fresh unit of Earl Godwins Ceorls... they avenged the death of the Huscarls, killing the Viking hirdmen and throwing the corpses in the river...

Jarl Eirik now thought he had a opportunety to exploit, sending more of he´s men over the river to continue the fight...

The victory was complete for Jarl Eiriks warriors...once again the use of several SAGA abilities at the right moment made a greate difference... The rest of Jarl Eiriks warband waded over the river to the enemy side...

At the same time at the bridge...Earl Godwin had gathered enought courage;) to order he´s Daneax armed Huscarls to attack the berserkers and clear the Bridge...

After a short and brutal fight all the Huscarls and Berserkers was slain...

...don´t send your best men to deal with berserkers, they will likely do the work, but it will most certainly cost them their lives...

Earl Godwin had now a clear passage over the Bridge for hes´warband BUT... there was fewer men left in he´s warband so he had ti continue the fight and slay some more Vikings so the numbers would be to he´s advantage...

Earl Godwin ordered he´s last unit of Ceorls to attack the Vikings that had crossed the river and throw them back...

It was a good and fair fight the Earls Ceorls fighted well but they was eventuallt cut donw by the victorious Vikings...

With no men left Earl Godwin thought it was better to invit Jarl Eirik for a feast and pay tribute them sacrifice he´s life to nothing...he would soon be back for revenge...

This was a realy nice game, both Andy and I have started to learn to make good use of the battleboard abilities, whtch realy are the key to the game.

It will defenetly be mor SAGA songs from us:)

The SAGA Dice are still "currently out of stock" and I waiting for my order of Viking dice... I think you lose some of the feel for the game then you use ordinary D6 as we have so far...

So I have started to make my own SAGA Dice to use untill the real and expensive stuff arrive:)

The latest week I have painted for my SAGA Viking Warband, here are some pictures of my Warlord Jarl Eirik Gunnarsson.

The minis are from Gripping Beast, a plastic one that have become "Stambo" or Marksmen that carrys tha Jarls Raven Banner.

The Jarl himself have been turned around so the looter wasen´t in the foreground of the base and he got a new larger Daneax from the plastik kit, i hope you like him and that he´s enemys don´t:)

I have had a chanse to try out the new Dark Ages skirmish game SAGA. Here are a short AAR and some pictures...

We only had minis for two 3 point armys, but it worked out fine anyway. I commanded the Vikings and my friend Andy commanded the Anglo-Danish.

If you are a warloard it´s good to have some comrades around that can be sacrifice if the Warloard recives to many wonds...

Thanks to the supporting Hirdmen Eirik managed to deffeated Knut and won a costly victory, lose all his Hird, Bersearks and half the Bondis...

Was a nice game and I suppouse it will be even funniet then you learn to use all the Battleboard opptions in the right way.

Last week I ans Stewe had a first frial game in our fantasy setting "Hel" we used tha Song for Blades and Heroes rules. I only got these 2 pictures as the memory card to my camera was full...

The 2 warband was my Order Knights vs. Hel and her followers...

It was a realy nice game and the rules worked fine.

I didn´t use the ordinary stats for the Zombies as they then only activate on 6+ and that is to frustrating to not get them to do anything turn after turn... so they activated on 4+ but was only allowed one move action each turn, worked realy nice...not realy as I lost the game...

AAR Battle at Älgsundet 1457 #2

I have had a chanse to re-play my scenario about the Battle at Älgsundet in 1457, then the Swedish Archbishop Jöns Bengtsson (Oxenstierna) rebelled against the Swedish King Karl Knutsson (Bonde)...

This time we played on a 120x180mm table.

I used a different Break point system: add the Hits for all troops in the army divide by 2 and you got the armys Break point, if you lose as many points worth of untis the army breake and they lost the battle... units that get shaken count as half the points lost as long as they stay shaken. I hope you got it...

Set-up...The Kings men, to the right, started in their camp. They was just awaken by the nightguards, and got to recive 2 successfull orders to get ready for the battle and for a proper battleline...

The Rebels started of board and was allowed to enter on their first turn...

The Kings men have just ruched out of theirs tent, starting to assemble for battle...

The inhabitans of the nearby farm started to move there livestock to saftey in the forest...

Just the rebel generals was placed on the Table at first...

The Rebells start to move out of the forest and up on the battlefield to come... the Knights seem to have problem in the forest as they didn´t manage to enter the field...

The King and he´s commanders had without any problem managed to rally theirs forces and form a battle line with the Mounted knecht to the right and the Allmoge to the left and both flanks covered by mercenary handgunners...

The poor farmers prepare to defend their property and to move the family members to saftey...

The Kings battle line...

The Archbishop leads from the rear of 2 units of allmoge soldiers...

The Kings battle line advance up to the Fence and awaited the rebells...

The Archbishop was so eager to see blood that he incautious advanced with he´s allmoge soldiers to confront the Kings Knechts...leaving all support behind...

The King didn´t want to lose this chance and ordered he´s Knecht to CHARGE !!!

It become a hard fight with several casualtys on both sides...but the Archbishops troops manage to resist the Cavalry charge and come out on top...

Overview...

The Archbishop had taken a chanse and was struggleing to keep the initiative in the battle... desperatly awaiting to be supported by he´s knights and more allmoge units...

The King was trying to get he´s Knecht back in to the fight...not wanting to commit he´s allmoge units just yet...

The Archbishops troops managed to brake one of the Kings Knecht units...and the Knights managed to move up just in front of the Handgunners...

The Archbishop wanted to order he´s Knights to make a hedlong charge on the Handgunners...but failed so they had to recive some more shooting...

The Rebells 2nd battle managed to, at last, make a swift advance to protect the Archbishops exposed flank...

The commander of the rebells 2nd battle ordered a fullout attack, and lead he´s allmoge warriors in a ferocious charge!!!

Hard fought combat in the center...

The Archbishops allmoge units managed by crossbow fire brake the 2nd Knecht unit...

At the same time the Knights slaughter the Kings handgunners...

Several rounds of combat did take it´s toll on the involved units...One of the Rebell allmoge units did breake by the hard pressure from The kings allmoge units...

The Rebells had lost 1 allmoge unit worth 6 breake points and the knights was Shaken, totaling up to 8 lost break points.

The King had so far lost 3 small units worth 12 break points, if any of the remaing unist would be shaken och break he would lose the battle...

In what would become to be the last round, the fight in the center ended in yet one more of the Kings allmoge units become shaken... Totaling the Kings break points to 15!

This leading to the Kings forces to break of the battle and retreat...the king managed to escape with some of he´s loyal knights and made it to the Capital Stockholm, he htought he´s cause was lost, so he took the royal treasury and fleed to exile in Danzig...

But he would be back...

About a month agoe I started to paint some Knights for my Kalmar Union War Project...but then Oskar lured me in to a "small" fantasy project...I´m now back at track, I hope...

I have 24 knights to paint, 18 Union/Danish/German and 6 Rebell/Swedish. I will paint them i batches of 6, and here are some pictures of the first 6 knights...

This will represent a small unit of Knights for the Hail Caesar rules, the average units will have 6 bases...

They are under command of a Holstein Noblemen from the House of Ahlefeldt.

As I had painted the banner from my memory, that obviously arn´t that good, I had to repaint the wing symbole on the banner...

I have made one more Warband for our Dark Fantasy Project, this time some "Pilgrims".

The minis are Games Workshop from my old Mordheim warband, painted at least 10 years agoe...

They have got a small makower...new bases, a wash of devland mud and some new highlights...

The dogs are the same kind of minis as for my Ordens Knight, from the chronopia range...got 5 in a blister:)

The will act as allies to my Ordens Knight...or not...

I have just painted a terrain piece for out small Fantasy Project, a Stone circle with a stone altar in the middle, might add some more snow...but I like the cold and frosty look of the ground...

You can alsoe see a newly repainted and rebased Druid from the old Games Workshops Dogs of War range. I´m not realy sure how and if I will expand he´s "warband" yet... any suggestions?

Here are some pictures of my first Warband to Song of Blades and Heroes.

Can´t realy leave the historical gaming for fantasy so I started out light by making me a Order Knight with followers.

Ordern Brüder Udo von Dirkschneider with he´s followers.

The minis are 28mm and you might notice the snow on the bases...

Most of the minis are from the Games Workshop old Bretonnian range.

All the infantry are halberd minis, 2 of them I converted to crossbowmen...and most of them got cloaks to get some shelter from the cold weather.

The dogs are some old ones from a game called Chronopia...I think...

The title ~~might~~ DID get him in to the national team... and he´s of to the WTKA World Championship in Italy 27th to 30th October 2011...

Chronicles of Hel

Lured in to a little? side project by my friend Oskar...

We are seting up a small skirmish campaign that I think we decided to call "Chronicles of Hel".

It will be a dark fantasy setting(no black powder guns...)in a snowy, cold and barbaric world there the cowards get a new chanse to prove that they are ment for better worlds...

We will start to use the rules Song of Blades and Heroes and hope that they turn out well...

Anyway it give me a chanse to paint some 28mm minis on "heroic" bases:)

Here are a VIP picture of the our gaming table and the terrain, I haven´t helped out to much, it is all thanks to Oskar.

Next step will be some tuffts and to add dipp to the marches and stream. After that the snow will fall;)

Commanders

As some of you may have noticed from the Battle at Helgeandsholmen AAR there was 2 new Commanders on the gaming table, one on each side...hera are some close-ups of them...

The First one will mostly represent the Danish Marshal Claus Rönnow.

The Yellow flag with the red cross are the official Kalmar Union banner, first mentioned by the King Erik of Pomeranian back in 1430´s

The Commander are from the Perry WoTR range.

The banner bearers are 2 Games Workshop Dogs of War minis

The second commander will mostly act on the rebell side as Nils Bosson Sture from the House Natt och Dag.

He often got the support from the Darlecarlian Allmoge, and they probably fought under a Saint olof banner.

The inspiration to the Saint Olof banner came from a Norwegian banner I found in a book about churches in Darlecarlia that was dedicated to Saint olof

The Command mini are a Kingmaker Hussit commander but I changed the broken warhammer to a Viking ax from the Gripping Beast vikings:)

The banner bearers are 2 old Games Workshop Brettonian minis...

AAR Battle at Helgeandsholmen 21 August 1463

Here comes the AAR from our latest Kalmar Union War game using the Hail Caesar rules.

Background
In 1459 the Union/Danish King Christian I got the opportunity to inherit Schleswig, but he had to pay off some of he´s relatives. The price however, was astronomical, 123000 guilders, equivalent to 30750 silver marks or six tons of silver!!! and this would be borne by the Union population. All citizens in Denmark and Sweden had to pay extra taxes to cover for the cost...

The increased tax burden in Sweden met with resistance. 1463 imposed an additional tax of 12 cents for each tax farmer and 6 cents for every country people. When the Allmoge in Uppland protested violently, declared Archbishop Jöns Bengtsson (Oxenstierna) that the tax was abolished.

When King Christian returned to Stockholm the Archbishop was imprisoned and taken to Denmark. Uppland Allmoge marched to Stockholm and camped on Norrmalm. Under the leadership of the Swedish Marshal Ture Turesson (Bielke) the Kings soldiers attacked the Allmoge on August 21 at Helgeandsholmen just outside the Stockholm city walls...

Opposing Armies
As there is no true historical account of which and how many participated in the battle, I have based the army lists on the minis I had available at the moment, The scenario at the end have a different OOB then the one we used in this AAR, it was my firts intentiobn but I diden´t have time to finish all minis...

As Commander for the Allmoge I have put relatives to the Imprisoned Archbishop that had estates in Uppland and had the possibility to influence the Allmoge to a rebellion.

The Rebel Allmoge army was attacked from two directions. One force attacked from Stockholm under command of the Danish Marshal Claus Rönnow and one was the reinforcements attack by the Knechts under command of Swedish Marshal Ture Turesson (Bielke) that was returning back from an attack on the Archbishops fortress at Almarestäket...

The game starts when the Defenders of Stockholm have deployed outside the city walls to engage the rebels according to map.

The Union reinforcements will enter on a roll of 4,5 or 6 in turn 2, on 3,4,5 or 6 in turn 3 and in turn 4 they will enter automatically. The Rebels has the first turn...

The rebells on Brunkebergsåsen leave theris night camp and start to move against the Bridge to Helgeandsholmen. They are going to reinforce the allmoge units that got over during the night...

The defender of Stockholm just await to have theirs reinforcement to arrive...

The Danish 2nd in command decide that he will try to deffeat the rebel force on Helgeandsholmen before they can get theirs reinforcements over the bridge...

The battle start out with some missile fire from both sides, the rebell allmoge got the uper edge and manage to break!!! one of the Danish mercenary units, due to poor morale. The mercenary unit flees back behind the safty of the Stockholm City Wall...

With one mercenary unit taken care of the Rebell commander order a charge!!! a fierce hand to hand combat that last for several turns begins...

At last! The Danish Reinforcements arrives, but they have left the Knights back at the camp... The commander Ture Turesson Bielke was a keen fighter so we gave him +3 if he joins a combat, all other commander only added +1.

Ture Turesson orders he´s Knecht to advance against the supprised Allmoge.

Then he order he´s mercenary handgunners to make a advance to the left...but they "missunderstod" the order and as they already got all the loot they could carry, by ransacking the Archbishops estate, they decided to go back to the camp and party with the Knights...

At Helgeandsholmen the rebell allmoge had managed to defeat the last danish mercenary unit, chasing them back behind the city walls...

The Knecht charged but was repulsed, both units shaken...even though Ture Tureson Bielke was leading from the front adding 3 attacks...

With 2 mercenary infantry units Broken, the 2 units of Knechts shaken and all mercenary handgunners of to party, the Danish commandes shoose to call it a day...

It was a realy nice and intense game, but I think it would have turned out more to history i.e Ture Turesson Bielke and he´s Knechts and Knights massacred the allmoge. The Union Soldiers even entered the Helgeandhouse and killed enemy´s that had seek sanctuary in the chapel after this event Ture Turesson Bielke was known as infamous "allmoge butcher"...

Song of Drums and Shakos

I have tryed out the rules "Song of Drums and Shakos" with my 28mm AWI minis.

It worked out realy well even if my minis are multi based. 1 of my bases was equal to 1 mini in the rules...

I was runing a small engagement. A Native war party was assaulting a small settlement but meet harsh resistanse from the local militia...

10x Warriors with some coureurs de bois

Local Militia
1x Captain
8x Militia

A small groupe of Braves advance through the field, the militia respond with a volly of muskets that dosen´t harm even a barn door...

As it takes 2 actions to reload, the Natives take the chance and charge the poor militia...

a fierce fight begins and both sides take casualtys...

the fight continued for some more rounds, and ended with the escape of the Militia Captain and some small part of he´s glorius militia company...

It was a short but nice test game with just about half as many points as the rules recomend, and I think it will get even better and faster then I learned the rules:)

I have done as "The Angry Lurker" commented "it's not my period of interest at this time and they should go to medieval nuts" so I have looked after some "medieval nuts" and found that these 3 fits the description;)

Alan at The Duchy of Tradgardland for he´s great interest in Medieval Scandinavia. Good luck with your Danish 13th centry army;)

Sire Godefroy at Conquering the Lead Mountain that are a real medieval reenactor and historical fencer as well as a realy good miniature painter.

Bedford at La Journee That was one of the creators behind the spectacular demo game "Battle of Verneuil 1424" at Salute.

They will each get a copy of the book, Medieval Manner of Dress: Documents, Images and Surviving Examples of Northern Europe, Emphasizing Gotland in the Baltic Sea.

There will be one more post connected to the Medieval week...I thought the one about Lojsta Slott would be the last one BUT I just remebered that I purchase 3 extra copys of a books about Medieval Manner of Dress then I visited the museum.

Iron Age Great Hall

My last post of pictures from the Medieval Week are some pictures from Lojsta Slott that are a Iron age hill fort and near by you have a reconstructed Iron age/Viking Great Hall. Unfortunally the hillfort area was´t cleard so you couldn´t realy see the hill fort...they promissed to clear the are from trees and bruches to next summer...but here are some pictures of the Great hall.

Lojsta Hall is the oldest reconstructed Iron Age type house in Sweden, an important historical landmark on Gotland. It was built after the excavations in 1929 on the original site, near one of the Manor’s lakes.

It dates to about 400 AD and is a typical longhouse with both people and their livestock living under one roof.

It was probably inhabited for about 300 years before it got abandoned like many other Iron Age sites at the same time. In those days, it was easy to travel from Lojsta to the Baltic Sea and trade goods. The roof is thatched with Great Fen-Sedge (Cladium mariscus), a plant which is common to the local moors.

The Lojsta area on Gotland is famous for its lakes. The Lojsta Slott Manor is taken care of by the Lojsta Slotts Hembygdsförening, founded 1921. They keep the area around Lojsta Slott open and available for outdoor activities. Since 1921 Midsummer is celebrated in traditional ways. There are regular activities to preserve old crafts, like coalmining, building boats and old ways of constructing and maintaining houses. Many school classes start or end their semesters on Lojsta Slott with a outdoor camp.

Battle at Visby

Unfortunaly we left Visby by boatduring the night befoe the reenactment of the Battle of Wisby, but I found some nice film that show the battle.

The Battle at Wisby Monday the 27 of July 1631

A unit of peasant soldiers march onto the battle field. They look ragged and their armor consists of various pieces gathered from different places. Some have decent equipment and some have no equipment at all. Some of them have swords, spears and crossbows and others still have tools for agriculture which will now be used to harvest lives instead of crops. Some are mere boys. Others are already old. Some come riding at their small horses, russar, but most of them walk. They are what could be mustered, the last defence. They have already tried to stop the Danes in Mästerby, with little luck.

They greet another Gotlandish force coming from a different direction. They all know that the enemy is close. A courier comes riding, telling them that the Danes are already there. The Gotlandish leaders decide to take up defensive positions on a couple of small hills – there is not enough time to get inside the walls.

The Danes appear behind a ridge. A Gotlandish force is not quick enough, but are trodden down by the heavy horses of the Danish knights. The main Danish force form up and march at the Gotlandish lines. The battle commences. The well-oiled, efficient Danish force gains the upper hand, and the Gotlandish center breaks. People scream and the Danes break through. They are now able to fight one half of the Gotlandish army at a time.

They start with the left one. Arrows dart through the air, and the infantry grinds the peasants to a panicking mass of dying, retreating men. The Danish cavalry pursue the fleeing men and cut them down. After all is finished, the Danes turn to the right one. The Gotlanders are firmly defending their hill – but it is of no use. In the end, they are only a handful left and they are completely surrounded, fighting for their lives. In the middle, the Gotlandish banner is still flying, but eventually no one is able to hold it high anymore. It falls. The Gotlanders are defeated and the Danes pursue the fleeing peasants.

The Danish king charges the field with his body guard. Then all is silent. All that is left is the bodies of the men that fought and died to defend their homes. The bells in the cathedral tolls, when a memorial service is held for the fallen.

Battle at Mästerby

During the Medieval Week there was 2 reenactments revolving the Danish Invasion in 1361.

I and several houndred of interested was out side Visby to a place called Mästerby and watched the reenactment battle. Here are some pictures and 2 short film clips.

The Swedish Historical Professor Dick Harrison was guiding the audience through the battle.

The Gotlandish force is located on the northern side of Sudertingsån. A number of men are destroying the bridge which crosses the stream. They are working fast, since their scouts have told them that the Danish army is close, and on its way. The Danes have large numbers, modern armour and modern weapons. The Gotlanders themselves have old equipment, but they are truly motivated. They fight to protect their families and homes from the devestation following the Danish army.

The bridge finally crumbles, pulled down by horses, and it does so with a terrible crash. It is at the very last minute, because the Danish vanguard is in sight. The Danes spy out the Gotlanders and, after a while, they pick up formation and advance towards the stream. Getting into and then up from the stream furrow proves to be a hard task; the Gotlanders hold their formations, stabbing and slashing anyone who tries to cross the stream. The Danish vanguard is forced to retreat several times and at last, king Valdemar realizes that his troops will not be able to cross.

He sends off scouts to find another passage over the steam – not too far off, at Fjäle myr, a passage is found. A group of Danish soldiers are sent to cross at Fjäle. The Gotlander crossbow archers attempt to stop the group, but their bolts are almost useless due to the modern, Danish armours. At the same time, the main army attack again, across the stream.

Suddenly, the Gotlanders find themselves battling their enemy at several fronts at once. Their lines break and parts of the Gotlander army starts to retreat. The Danish finally manage to cross the bog on horseback and attack full scale. The Gotlanders are pursued and killed in what proves to be a strenuous battle. Valdemar expresses his hopes that the following battles will not prove to be as difficult as those at Mästerby. Text from the "Battle of Wisby 1361-2011" site

Medieval Camp outside Visby

Here are some pictures from one of the larger, about 40 tents, medieval camps just out side Visby. This camp was set up by the "Battle at Visby 1361-2011" project, they was responible to arrangentwo 1361 reenactment battles during the medieval week.

The 2 battles was The Battle at Mästerby and the Battle at Visby, unforunaly I only could se the smaler one at Mästerby...pictures soon...

Historical Mueum in Visby

One of the days we spent at "Fornsalen" that are a greate Historical Museum in central of Visby, it was so greate that I forgett to take pictures...but I have some...

They have a large exebition about the Gotlandic History and ofcourse with a focus on the Battles of Gotland specially the Battle at Visby in 1361.

The Battle of Gotland.

On July 22, 1361 landed the Danish invasion army at the central west coast of Gotland, probably in Fröjel. As early as July 23 should be the army of Danish King Valdemar the lead having reached Fjaler bog and Sudertingsån which they must pass in order to continue to Visby. Here, according to tradition have been two types of large losses from Gotland. July 26 - a Monday - continued to march towards Visby and 27 was a great battle outside Visby's closed gates. According to contemporary data Fallen 1800 Gotlanders here.

Two days after the battle opened the city gates and Visby Council received the Danish king who had them sign a very kindly worded charter to ... "the wise and honest men, mayor, aldermen and the bourgeoisie in our town, Visby, our dear and faithful people, who they had the old time "... In Visby, life went on and commerce seem to be underway shortly after 29 July.

The dead were buried, including the large mass graves that were dug in the consecrated ground of the Cistercian nuns' cemetery just east of the city wall. Farms may be suspected of having looted and much of the countryside was devastated. For the farmers on Sudret the fight was not over. Another type is according to later sources to have been there Gotland is at its narrowest, between the FIDE Church and Burg Bay. The task is supported by leaving messages in the FIDE church.

"Solberga mannen" The Solbergaman are a reconstruction by Oscar Nilsson based on a cranium found in the mass-graves after the 1361 battle outside Visby.

This is one showing the Harbour during the 14th centery, due to the lower water and higher land the old harbour are now a nice park called "Almedalen"

The museum are built inside 3 of the Old packhouses near the old harbour and they have set parts of one up as in the 14th centery, This is the Showroon in the Packhouse there the merchant showed examples of the merchandises they had in the uper floors.

In the museum they alsoe have a section dedicated to the Gotlandic 17th century innovator, entrepreneur and technology educator C. Polhem, with lots of he´s tecnical innovations to test. Realy nice specially for the kids.

Medieval Week Pictures

Here are the first round of pictures from my trip to Visby and the Medieval Week, I hope that you find them inspiring and make a trip there next year...it´s always week 32...at least it have been so for the last 20 years or so;)

Early morning in Nynäsham, boarding the ferry. It´s a 3 hour ferry ride from Nynäsham on the mainland to Visby on Gotland.

The Kogg "Tvekamp af Elbogen" was visiting Visby during the week...the Kogg are a replica of a wreck find from Foteviken in Scania, the Kogg find are probably the oldest find of a armed Hansa Kogg. It was build in Poland around 1390 and was shipwrecked shortly after 1400, the Kogg was probably used by the pirates "Victual Brother".

There was probably 150-200 different traders at the medieval market all week.

Kapitelhusgården i.e. Chapeterhouse-yard have its own small medieval market about 10 traders and a medieval tavern.

The Chapeterhouse are active all summer and is realy worth a visit.

There was at least 3 different medieval camps around Visby during the week, this is the smallest one, 20-30 tents, placed at the Jousting court.

The Teutonic Knights part of the camp...but they are all away to subdue some heathens...or just shop at the market;)

One evening I and my daughter was to the Tournament, the first one for her and she realy liked it:)

The first time I saw this tournament was about 15 years ago...and they have realy improved to a realy nice and professional show.

We ofcourse made some trips outside Visby to. This is ,Tofta Church, one of the about 100, still in use, medieval Churches on Gotland.

Hi again:) sorry for not moderated your comments the last week, I haven´t had a computer aroud...

Me and my family have been to Visby on the Swedish Island Gotland for the yearly Medieval Week (always week 32) for the first time after 5 years absens, after 10 straight years:)

I will post some photos during the week, now I have to unpack and maybe paint a mini or two...

Flea Market Bargains

I have built one Swedish log house but I will need some more and during this summer I have been looking around several flea markets up in Darlecarlia for some souvenir houses...

...and I found this 3 for only 30SEK ($5/£3/€3) that I thought would work fine after some remodeling...

...the houses after some remodeling, the right one was still to high so I have removes one more layers of logs...they are now waiting to be painted in a week or so...

I will ofcourse build me some more Sewdeish medieval houses but this was a fast and easy way to get started...

AAR Battle at Älgsundet 1457

At last have I played my first Kalmar Union War game using the Hail Caesar rules. I have writen a small scenario about the Battle at Älgsundet in 1457, then the Swedish Archbishop Jöns Bengtsson (Oxenstierna) rebelled against the Swedish King Karl Knutsson (Bonde)...

I diden´t have the time to go down to the club and play it ou,t so my kitchen table had to do...and the only gamingmat I had was 60x90cm!!! But as Hail Caesar is a realy adaptable game system so it worked out fine:)

I had to make some small changes...I only fielded half of the units in my scenario and I used Centimetres instead of Inch...

And I changed the Break point system to: add the Hits for all troops in the army divide by 2 and you got the armys Break point, if you lose as many points worth of untis the army breake and they lost the battle... units that get shaken count as half the points lost as long as they stay shaken. I hope you got it:)

Set up map for my orginal scenario, yes I have lost a D in Älgsundet;)

My small gaming board, the troops moved in on turn 1...and a Shepherd with some livestock as spectators...

The Battle begins with a cautious advance by both sides... The Archbishops troops to the left and the Kings troops to the right...

The Kings Mercenary Handgunners advanced in cover of the fenced field...

The Archbishop sends he´s skirmishers out to the right to screen of the Handgunners...while he´s Allmoge units start to shower the Kings troops with crossbow bolts...

Both sides try to soften the enemy troops by crossbow fire... in the back you can see the King rally he´s Allmoge troops...

At the same timetThe Kings Handgunners managed to frighten of the Allmoge skirmishers...and make the Archbishops side to loose 4 Break points... just 4 left...

As the Kings troops were a little inferior in shooting capacity, they decided to charge !!!

A intence close combat that lasted for 3 turns followed...

At fisrst it seemed like the Archbishop would be Victorious as the Kings men started to retreat...

BUT The Kings Allmoge troops came out on top in the end, then they manage to break one of the Archbishops Allmoge units and make the Archbishops side to loose another 6 Break Points to a total of 10 lost Break points and a Lost Battle...

Even in a Insignificant format, like this gam,e Hail Caesar have proven to be a greate game system! We had a realy fun and intense game that lasted for a little more than one hour.

Below you can fins my Scenario and it wouldent be to hard to be set in the WOtR, playing the Allmoge units as mixed Bill and Bow units... Please let me know if you try it out:)

I got me some medieval cows that are making some noise;) and of course a heard of sheeps witha a vigilant shepherd...

I painted them for my Kalmar Union War Project but as they are quite generic I will use them for my AWI project to:)

House of Vinstorp

Here we have some Danish and German mercenarys under command of Staffan Bengtsson from the House of Vinstorp.

The Hous of Vinstorp was from the border nobility. i.e Nobles that often had estates on boath sides of the Danish/Swedish border in the area around Scania, Blekinge and Halland (Denmark at the time) and Småland, Östergötalans (Sweden at the time).

Many Nobles from the border nobility sided with the Union/Danish as they wanted to preserve the union for easy trad over the border and easy access to their estates on both sides.

My aim was to using red, yellow and white a little more to get a slightly obvious Union/Danish and "uniform" look of the unit, as they was mercenarys

At the moment the Danish/Union unit also have a couple of crossbow bases, not realy sure if they fought mixed as the Allmoge, probablu not, but at the moment they do... I will paint up some more and then I will have tha possibility to chose...

All minis are from the Perry plastic mercenary box, with coverted pikes to Bills. The Commandes arms are from a old Games Workshop Empire box...

As you can see I have tow different colour schemes, one for the banner and one for the trumpet flag...The House of Vinstorp was a little special about their Coat of Arms, two contemporary members did not use the same colours on their Coat of Arms, as was the costumary with other Noble Houses.

Here are my first mounted tropps for my Kalmar Union Project. This are some Knechts under command of Ture Turesson from the house of Bielke.

Ture Turesson was a Swedish noblemen that was a close allied to the Union King Christian I. After the Battle/Slaughter of Helgeandsholmen in 1463 he was known as the "Allmogens Köttmånger" i.e."Allmoge Butcher"

The Knechts was full time soldiers and did the "dirty work" for the Noblemens...

The minis are most Kingmaker but ther are a Crusader mini to and the leader mini are a old GW Dogs of war mercenary mini that got a crossbow instead of he´s lance:)

Armed with Crossbows, Swords and god Armour the Knechts was ready to collect taxes and subdue allmoge rebellions...

Now there are Ordning amongst my paint bottles;) I got my self a new paint rack for 60 bottles from the German company Miniaturicum.

It is made of 2mm MDF and are delivered IKEA style, flack package and you have to assemble it by your self, wasen´t to hard...

Long delivery time but i´m very pleased with my new paint rack:)

Björn, Fredrik and I have continued our Iberian adventure during the Cartaghinian war using the Hail Caesar rules.

This time I had put together a scenario inspired by the battle of Castulo in 211BC, this was one part of the Battle of the Upper Baetis, the second part are ofcourse the next game...

The romans had devided their army in two parts, one part under command of Publicus Scipio made a swift night march to be able to suprise the Iberian chieftain Indibilis and he´s troops by a dawn attack.

What the roman commander or Player(Fredrik)didn´t know was that there was large amounts of Carthaginian unit in the nearby area, that would arrive as support during the battle...

Turn 2, The Iberians to the left had managed to form some sort of fighting formation in turn 1 and was now avaiting the Roman advance...

The Romans to the right started out slow in the first turn but the following turns they made some swift movement forward the enemys...

Exept for the Cretan Archers that apperentlu haden´t been payed enough and only stroll int their own pace...

The Romans had soon made it to the outskirt of the Iberian Camp, on the Roman right flank their Italian Allies charged a Iberian unit and managed after soem turns of fighting breake the enemy...

At the same time the Carthaginians heard the sound of reinforcements...but due to poor command of Masanissas they didn´t arrive on table...

At last did Masanissas and he´s light Cavalry arrive starting to harass the roman right flank.

In turn 5 the Carthaginians recived even more reinforcements, this time Hasdrubal Giscos slowly arrive with some Heavy Hoplite Infantry...

The Romas that by now knew that they had to win this before to much reinforcements could arrive mad a puch all over the line...

The Romans fought hard in the center there Indibilis Celtiberians put up stiff resistance...

By some reason Hasdrubal Giscos didn´t manage to get he´s troops in to the fight...the Roman commander claimed that it was the newly paid Cretan Archers that stoped them with accurat missile fire...

The Carthaginians recived even ore reinforcements...this time Mago arrived with Cavalry and Elephants... The Roman commander started to get realy stressed...

Final Puch by the Romans... in turn 7 they managed to Breake one of the Celtiberian units, as they breake the baleric slingers alsoe Broke and the last Celtiberians retreated in to the camp...

The Romans followd up to keep the contact and managed after some more intense fighting to finish the last Celtiberian unit of and by that forcing the rest of the Carthaginian army to withdraw...Glory to Rome...

Round Pole fence #2

Then I painted my house I also painted the first 10 parts of my Swedish Gärsgård or in English Round Pole Fence.

Close-up of the repainted Rebell/Swedish var flag with Saint George...I have removed the cross and painted the 3 Swedish crowns instead, as that symbole was used erlier than the yellow cross. The other banner was designed in the 1440´s by the Swedish King Karl VIII Knutsson from the House of Bonde, this banner would from this time on be the Swedish Royal Coat of Arms, only with a small shield in the middle showing the House of the regent.

The house are finished, thaks for following the building progress:)

I was quite common to decorate the planking around the doors, with wood carving similars to celtic patterns and paint them. I thought my planking was to small to do any wood carving, but I painted it in a dark red colour with some patterns i red...

It was quite common in early times and later for the poorer familys to keep there cattles in one separate part of the house during the winter. The warmth from the animals helped out to keep the house warm.

Small slots to let in some light and keep out the cold in the living area of the house.

My nest building will be a "Stolp Härbre" a storage building raised up on poles, like the one below.

Now the hous have got it´s roof and a chimney so the inhabitants could keep them self warm during winter...

Most of the cooking and baking was done in a special hous "eldhus" i.e. firehouse, as they diden´t want to endanger the main building with large cooking fires.

Continued the work on my small house, i now have a door:) I alsoe built the ridge and made cutouts for the roof beams. But I had bought the wrong material for the beams... its 8mm and I want to use 5mm, got to go and shop befor the roof can be finished...

This house are built on a 12x8cm base using 5mm balsa staffs. To get some inspiration and knowledge about how they looked I have study Swedish Medieval Houses IRL and in a couple of books from the Darlecarlian Museum.

Ther are still quite many medieval houses leaft and in use in Darlecarlia, the oldest one from about 1230´s you can see at "Gopsmor" an open air museeum that is a part of the Zorn museeum in Mora.

Here are a small film about Gopsmor and Anders Zorn. The buildings in the film are from 1230 to about 1800 and ofcourse renovated through time...

To keep the heat inside they had very small doors windows/holes. They didn´t use glass as that was hard to come by and was expensive and fragile, so they just used a trapdoor to close the "window"

#2 Retire to Chartagena 215BC...

Here are some pictures from tuesday and our 2nd try at my scenario "Retire to Chartagena 215BC". The only real change was that Abylix Division had got one more unit of Celtiberians. i.e 2 of them... and that we tryed a new way of when the game would end, it is all in the scenario in my last post

Map of the set-up. Publicus Division started of board and may enter from turn 1, which it did...

The set-up, Carthaginians to the left and Romans to the right. Maximus Division started to make a swift advance against the Iberians under Abylix command on the hills... and Publicus Division started to wheel left and advance against the Carthaginian right flank under Hasdrubals command.

The Cretan archers managed to temporary drive away the Iberian Light Infantry, that seeked cover in the olive grove. maximus Division ended its swift advance just down the hill...

Björn measure the distance... The Celtiberians on the hill left there uphill possition and charged the Roman legioneres, managed to drive on away... and the Iberians sheltering in the olive grove charged the Cretan Archers that runway...for good...

The 2 battle lines approach each other for the final struggle...

Combat all over...this time the Carthaginians come out on top, forcing the Roman army to flee of the field...

Next time we will play a scenario based on the Battle of Castulo that was the first part of the Battle of the Upper Baetis in 211BC.

Round Stone Walls

Yesterday I got some Pegasus Hobbies "Round Stone Walls" that I ordered. Must say that they are realy good and thay are redy painted:)

They are perfect for my Swedish allmoge to rest theirs crossbows on or for the Danish mercenarys to take cover behind. 15cm long and about 2cm high and matches my Round Pole Fence;)

Retire to Chartagena 215BC

Last week we played our 3rd Hail Caesar game down at the club, this time I had writen a small scenario about a engagement that I called Retire to Chartagena 215BC.

We used Björns stuning minis and played on a 120x180cm table with all distances cut to 2/3.

It was a close call but the Chartaginians got out on top and got a marginal victory, we will take a rematch tomorrow...

At last are the 1st Black Powder supplement approaching, Last Argument of Kings! by Peter Brown. It is to be hoped that there are some more AWI info...although the preview article dosen´t say so...at least there are info about Great Northen War and Charles XII...

At the beginning of the 18th century, warfare entered a new era. The widespread use of the flintlock musket had transformed the way armies trained and fought. This period was a golden age for the crowned heads of Europe. They commanded professional troops, gloriously outfitted in splendid uniforms, and fought each other over land, wealth and the succession to their thrones. Some even led their armies on the field of battle. Yet by the end of the century, the real power of kings was gone or greatly eroded – parliaments would decide the foreign policy of nations, democracy had taken hold in the New World and the divine right of kings was everywhere being questioned.

These were the last wars fought to protect the succession rights of royalty. These wars were the Last Argument of Kings.

Swedish Allmoge Units

Here are some pictures of my Rebel/Swedish 1460´s army so far... A commander and 4 units of Allmoge soldiers under command of different Nobles. Most of the text below about the Swedish "army" during the Kalmar Union period has been whriten by my friend Ulf for a DBM army list...

Sweden had never really implemented feudalism and the commoners i.e.Allmoge had quite extensive legal rights and political agendas of their own. The Swedish nobles were a wilful lot and very keen on the King not getting too powerful. Efforts by the Union to extract more taxes and to modernize the country at the expense of traditional rights and privileges met with stiff resistance.

Sweden was almost continuously at war. Various factions either curried favour with the Union monarch or rebelled against him. The result was a confusing series of wars between factions vying for power while supporting or rejecting the Union King.

The Allmoge in each region (‘Landskap’, roughly the equivalent of an English county) to a large extent made their own decisions and frequently found themselves fighting against the Allmoge of other regions.

The Union King, usually a Dane or German, responded to rebellions by sending an army bolstered by lots of mercenaries. He also always tried to lure Swedish nobles over to his side. Rebellions could be very successful militarily, but infighting among factions meant that the country always returned to recognizing a Union King after political compromise, treachery and/or the odd murder.

The Swedish armies of this period differed quite a lot from most other European forces. Royal power was weak and there were always very few knights and other mounted troops. Instead the armies were dominated by the Allmoge troops, who were surprisingly effective. At their best (in the 1430s to the 1480s) the Allmoge infantry gave a very good account of themselves.

Their Achilles-heel was the lack of higher level leadership and the difficulty of keeping the armies in the field for long periods. The Allmoge were farmers, not professional soldiers, and simply went home for harvest, etc. This led to quite a bit of campaigning in winter, when farmers have some free time.

No known Swedish army of the period could deploy more than a couple thousand mounted troops in total, the overwhelming majority of other troops were Allmoge, with a few mercenaries (artillery specialists, for example) sometimes available.

House of Sture

Today we have some Allmoge commande by a real main character in the struggle for the Swedish crown in the 1460´s... Sten Gustavsson from the House of Sture or more known as Sten Sture (the Elder, nowerdays not back them...)

Sten Sture will develop to the Commander in Chief of the Swedish rebel forces and lead them in open battle with the Union/Danes in the Battle of Brunkeberg in 1471. The Victory at Brunkeberg made it possible for him to remain in place as regent for another 26 years.

Now I will paint some more units for the Union/Danish side, and then have me my first small game with them...The Battle of Helgeandsholmen in 21 August 1463... I hope that I have managed to paint all the minis I need for that battle until the 548 years anniversary... its a Sunday so it should be possible to get a game together at the club:)

Stockholm Medieval Museum

Last Weekend I visited the Stockholm Medieval Museum...not the first time;)

The museum are built around a excavation site in central stockholm, so inside the museum they have large sections of the city wall and other stuf they found during the excavation in the 80´s.

The focus are of course the medieval history of Stockholm, and they have a realy good and cheap (80sek/$14/£8/€10) Museum Guid Book that not only describe the museum but give a good context of the Swedish medieval history.

During the civil wars in the 1460´s Nils Bosson Sture manage to get support and lead the belligerent Allmoge from Darlecarlia to he´s cause against the Union King.

Last weekend I and my 2 children was to the Stockholm Medieval Museum. On our way we watched the Royal Life Guard on theirs way to the Royal Palace for the change of the guards.

About 20 years agoe I did my military service at the Royal Life Guard and did ride to the Royal Palace dress in these uniforms...

I haven´t read it all but it seems quite nice and a real good overwiev of the Medieval Scandinavian History it cover quite a bit...but no focus on war, battles or fancy battlemaps...

Here are on request;) a first draft of a Later Kalmar Union War army list for basic Impetus. Covering the period of 1497 the The Danish King Hans managed to retake the Swedish Throne, and all wars between the Union/Danish followers ant the Swedish Rebells up to 1523 and the Coronation of Gustav I from the House of Vasa as Swedish King and the end of the Kalmar Union.

The Changes from the early period are thar the Danish German mercenarys now have developed in to true Landsknechts and that the Swedish Allmoge have extended the use of Longer Spears to be able to meet the charge of Knights in the open...

Haraker Church

Last weekend I had the opportunety to passby the church of Haraker, and the battlefied of 1464...

Realy nice to be working on a painting project there you can visit the actual sites.

The stone wall that surround the Church was used in the danish deffence. In 1464 it was higher, at least 1.5m but might have been up to 2m high.

How the Church looks today after a major rebuild in the 18th century.

The first stone Church was built in the 14th century, but there have probably been a wooden church here already in the 12th century, as the oldest effects are a sandstone baptismal font from the 12th century.

In the second part of the 15th Centary the church got a new internal stone ceiling with external support columsn and a bell tower. I will probably build my church during the reconstrution and building of the bell tower in the 1460´s.

House of Bonde

Here are unit of Swedish Allmoge milita under command of Bo Djure from the House of Bonde. Bo Djure was the cousin of the deposed Swedish King Charles VIII Knutsson from the House of Bonde.

I will ofcourse make a command stand for the King Charles, as after the rebellion in 1464 he was reinstalled as king for the 2:nd time...

at least for a couple of month...

until Swedish Nobles, among others the Bishop Kettil Karlsson and the newly released Archbishop Jöns Bengtsson, this time allied with their former enemy the Union/Danish King Christian I managed to depose him again...

Bo Djure one of King Charles closest relatives and allied during the 1460:s Swedish Civil War.

The banner are based on King Charles Coat of Arms as the real Coat of Arms for the House of Bonde have reversed colours, i.e. Yellow background and a Red Boat...

2nd Hail Caesar game...

Last monday I and Björn played our 2nd Hali Caesar game. We played a scenario I writeh inspired of the Battle at Iberia in 215BC that was a part of the Punic war between the Romans and the Carthaginians. You can see Björns AAR at our clubforum.

The rules work fine, and we made less mistakes this time:) But we discovered that we should have used 2/3 of all ranges for weapons and movment etc. as we used such a small table i.e. 120x180mm, will do it next time;)

Kalmar Union War for basic Impetus...

On request I have put together a basic Impetus armylist for "Rebell Swedish" and "Union/Danish" armys ranging from 1434-1471 i.e. from the Engelbrekt rebellion to Battle at Brunkeberg. I haven´t tryed them out yet, but I hope that they work... might be some changes in the future after some playtesting;)

To the Allmoge units I would use about 10 minis, 50% crossbow/longbow and 50% with different kinds of handweapon,polearms, spears and improvised weapons, I would even mix in a knight or two in some unit as the nobles often disounted and led the allmoge by example.

I would alsoe use all sorts of armour ranging from non to full plate for the knights, the allmoge troops used what armour they coud get hold of even if it was obsolete. Iron hats was comon and the occasional shield of all sorts, from the old round shield to the knight sort.

I hope this have given you some guidence...

House of Oxenstierna

Here comes some pictures of the first unit of Swedish/rebell Allmoge Militia under command of Kristiern Bengtsson from the House of Oxenstierna, He was the brother of the in 1463 imprisoned Swedish Archbishop Jöns Bengtsson.

The Oxenstiernas was first Pro-Union but when the Danish King Kristian I Imprisoned the Archbishop Jöns they turned rebells...but in a year or two they was back on the Pro-union side again...
