Polish War 1625-1629 - AAR #6

Another epic battle have been fought in my Polish–Swedish War 1625–1629 campaign at the club to get further playtest games of the Pikeman´s Lament rules that I and Dan Mersey are working on.

The Campaign revolves around the war between the Swedes and the Poles in 1625-1629 and we have started of during the autum of 1625.

The Polish–Swedish Wars were a series of wars between the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and Sweden. Broadly construed, the term refers to a series of wars between 1563 and 1721. More narrowly, it refers to particular wars between 1600 and 1629.

The Polish–Swedish War of 1625–1629 was the fourth stage (after 1600–1611, 1617–1618, and 1620–1625) in a series of conflicts between Sweden and Poland fought in the 17th century. It began in June 1625 and ended four years later with the Truce of Altmark and later at Stuhmsdorf with the Treaty of Stuhmsdorf.

In 1621, the Swedes besiege and conquered Riga, which attracted attention, as it was the first time a Protestant leaders defeated a Catholic power. The Swedish army was worn and the Poles could regain the initiative at Dorpat. Truce was signed in November 1622 and was extended until March 1625. Any acceptable terms for peace with Poland, could not be reached, so Gustav II Adolf planned a new campaign against Poland, which began in June 1625. Kokenhusen, Birze and Mitau was captured and Dorpat was taken after six days of siege. During the autumn of 1625 two Polish armies appeared against the Swedish forces and Gustav II Adolf decided to get into a clash before the Polish forces managed to unite.

So this is the starting point for my Polish War club campaign.

Below are a map of the area around the Town of Kockenhus where the campaign are set during the Autum of 1625. The Red and blue sabers mark the point of each game and the winner...

Notes on unit types used in these games of Pikeman's Lament:

Gallopers are cavalry relying on rapid charges into close combat in the style of 30 Years War Swedish and French cavalry, when used we also put the Polish Winged Hussare in this unit type.

Trotters are cavalry relying more on pistol/carbine fire at some distance and are often in our games heavily armoured curassiers that may use caracolle tactics.

Forlorn Hope are small elite infantry units that usually are good at both melee and long range fire.

Pike and Shot are the iconic massed pikemen and musketeers of the pike and shot period.

Commanded shot are small units of skirmishing musketeers.

My mateys Gunnar a.k.a. Rotamaster Janosz Kowalski and Ulf a.k.a. Hammar-Henrik have posted full AAR´s of their point of view of the battle on their blogs and I only posted the OOB and my pictures here, so please take a visit to Gunnar´s blog for the Polish view and to Ulf´s blog to get the Swedish view of the battle, but pleas first have alook at my pictures below:)

Rebellion of 1463, Lion Rampant AAR

I just had to air my Medieval swedish collection some time ago so I put on a small Lion Rampant game for me and my Son David.

Instead of counting minis in each unit we counted bases of minis, so a Foot Serjant unit had 12 bases of 4 minis each, 48 minis in a unit. This way of using the Lion rampant rules works fine if you are a bit forgiving about movement etc.

For the game we used just 12 point retinues but still we managed to field about 140 foot and 15 mounted minis on the table. I lured David in to commanding the Danes and I took the heroic Swedish rebells ;)

OOB - Danish
Foot men at Arms with the King @ 6 points
Mounted Serjants with crossbows @ 4 points
Skirmishing Handgunners as Bidowers @ 2 points

OOB Swedish
2 Foot serjants with mixed weapons @ 6 points each one including the Bishop

The setting was the Rebellion of 1463, The Danish King and some of his most loyal men are on the move throught Sweden to lif the seige of Stockholm. The rebell Bishop ofcourse have set-up an ambush to try to stop their advance

Danes at the botton ans Swedes at the top.

The Danes adveance forward the small farm...they probably will loot and burn it...they always do when visiting sweden...

Dismounted Fräles (Foot knights), Mounted Knecktar (mounted crossbowmen) ans Skärmytslare with Handguns (Bidowers)

A unit of Swedish Allmoge soldiers fielded as Foot Serjants with Mixed weapons.

The Bishop with his loyal Allmoge...

Swift advance by the Swedish rebells forward the farm...

...might there have been better if they stayed in cover of the forest...

Deus vult !

The danes slowly advance forward the farm...

The Danish knights have dismountd as they know they would not have a chanse against the Swedes in the deep Swedish forest....

The Danish Knektar are still mounted as a mobile reserv as they are not as impetious so they will run straight ahead in to a forest ambuch...

Handgunner are always good to have...

Sees the swedish on the other side...

The Mounted Knektar are ordered to advance along the road...

...but they hesitate...

The Boshop get his men in a proper battle formation before they continue their advance...

The farm are in the hands of the Swedish rebells...

The Danes seems to have been slowd in their advance by the gärsgård (fence)...

The Danish dismounted Frälse have stoped and are taking cover behind the fence, but they still are in a bad spot for the Swedish missile fire...

Only the Danish dismounted Frälse seems to dare to advance...

...and they indeed do, crossing the fence to be able to attack the Swedish rebells...

The Swedish bishop starts to excomunicate the Danish King...

...but he dosent care much about that and order his men to prepare for an attack...

Slowely the Danes advance as they reciev a lot of shooting from the Swedish rbells...

due to good armour the Danes withstand the arrows and crossbow bolts...

...and close in for the final attack and caprute of the rebell Bishop...

CHARGE !!! a short and bloody  fight erupts...

...and are ended as quick as ist started...with the danish King and his finest men on the run...

The Bishop fails to take advantage of the situation...

...as the Danes send in their mounted knektar to cover the retreat of the King....

The mounted make good use of their crossbows...

...and get the Bishops men to start running...

At that moment the second unit of Swedish rebells at last have arrived by the farm...

much ado about nothing...

as the Dishop and his men are on the run the Mounted Knektar make good use of their speed and attack the Swedish allmoge that jus in the nick of time had rallied...

...as had the danish king and his dismounted frälse done, just in time to welcome the second Allmoge unit to the battle...

The mounted knektar totaly broke the Bishops unit and captured him in the mud as he fell of his hores in the stir...

With the Bishop in chains the remaining rebell seems to have given up their cause...

...and just remembered that it was time for harvest and they needed to get home..quick...

Once again David and his lucky dice had a victory...That was all for now the struggle for the Swedish allmoge continue...
