Stockholm 1392 an participation game at Salute 2015

"God's Friends and the Whole World's Enemies" - Stockholm 1392

It is 1392 and German mercenaries and pirates are terrorising the population of Stockholm. They are called the Vitalian Brotherhood and are ruling the city by fear and violence. Will the Swedes stand up to them ?

I and my fellow Darlecarlian Swede Jan, that have lived in exile in the UK for several years, will run a medieval participation game Salute 2015.

I Paint minis and set up the Scenarios for Lion Rampant, that are the rules we will use.

Jan that are a really talanted model builder are in the progress of building a 28mm model of the central part of Stockholm 1392. You have seen some of Jan´s work in 6mm in Miniature Wargames issu 376 and here at my blog. More about Jan´s building of the terrain later.

So I hope that some of you pass by and maybe even participate in one of our scenarios either as the Heroic Swedes or the Mean Mecklenburgers ;)

Håtunaleken, Lion Rampant, AAR #6

We had our 6th game in the Håtunaleken club project some week ago, I had set up two tables as it was expected several participants, but in the end we was only 6 players, we still used the two tables and putted them together to a 120x360cm table... and we run 2 scenarios at the same time...the defender in one was the attacker in the other... It was a quite fun approach and turned out really well, but the table was a bit to whide... next time same approach but on a 120x180 table....

The 2 Scenarios was first Scenarion C: The Fugetive, as The Rebell brothers had to find Valdemar that had escaped sins last scenario there he was captured by the King Birger and the second was Scenario F: Sausages with mustard, this was played as a de-coy attack from the Rebell Brothers to make it easier to rescue Valdemar.

I won´t give you a full AAR, was no chanse to keep track of all events, and I just got abunch of unsharp pictures.. sorry, I still hope you get a feel for the game.

Several of the units that was looking for Valdemar now started to move to help out by the farm...

But first the Trolle Foot Serjants manaded to lure Valdemar´s knight  in to the forest for a small picknick...

Also the House of Trolle Knights made an swift advance to protect the farm...

It all ended quite bad for the Kings men once again... only saveing one of the houses in the farm...

It was a nice game but a little to long distances, try the same concept of mixing scenarios but on a smaler table.

Perry Medieval Light Cavalry 1450-1500

At the Perry Facebook page I borrowed these lovely pictures of the upcomming Light Cavalry 1450-1500 beautifully painted by Simon Chick.

Seems like Renedra have one or two little tweeks to do on the frames and so they be up for sale at Salute, the boxes are about to be printed and Michael Perry working on the leaflet, that will include some more Kalmar Union War flags:)

There will be 12 in the box and can all be assembled as Svenner and Skyttar and come with command options AND the Swedish Oniontop helmet :)

Swedish Gold Coast 1650 - Native tribals

For my Cabo Corso, Swedish Goald Coast 1650 project that are a part of my playtest of Dan Merseys new Colonial rules The Men Who Would Be Kings  I really needed some native tribals...so I got me a box of the Wargames Factory Zulu minis...I would have prefered Masai style shields but at least these minis was cheap...

It is 30 minis in a box, this was enought for me to build 3 units of 8 minis with native tribals, a tribal unit by the rules are 16 minis !!!

But I have argued with Dan that it will take to much minis for gamers to get started, so Dan have been kind enought to included "Skirmish Kings" in the ruleas based on my suggestions, at least for now.

In "Skirmish Kings" the only difference are that you field half sized unit, and that work perfect for me as now I only need 24-64 minis for a field force, much easier to achive painting and money wise...

The remaining 6 minis of the 30 in the box was designated to be captured slaves...

I have based them on round bases with 3 different sizes, 25mm for single minis, 40mm for doubble minis anf 50mm for the ones with 3 minis. This is so I will be able to remove single losses and to speed up play while moving the minis on the gaming table.

I thought it was best to get something painted up to set the scene for my Africa project, so what is better then some wild life, So I have searched the local toyshops for some African animals that would match 28mm minis and ended up with a Rhino and a Hippo, just gave them a wash, a bases and they was ready for play.

I have also painted up some whitemen, a unit of Dutch regulars under command of the infamouse Captain Van Effen. The Dutch East India Company was the main competition and main nemesis to the Swedish Africa Company regarding the trade in Cabo Corso i.e The SWEDISH Gold Coast;)

Last I have some pictures of 2 units of Swedish Regulars that got new bases, you have seen then before in the Scanian War, but they have now a tour of duty down in Africa, seems like they dosent want to leave their Carpus (Cap) at home ;)

Cabo Corso - The Swedish Gold Coast 1650

So to my new wargaming project in conjunction with my playtest of Dan Meresys "The Men Who Would Be Kings", I have searched for a good Swedish angle of the colonial wars in Africa and the Swedish Officers in the Service of King Leopold and the Free Congo State are one track that I will follow leter on...

But I wanted some thing evem more exotic...

So I decided to run a project revolving around Cabo Corso - The Swedish Gold Coast in 1650-1663, present-day Ghana. The 1650´s are not really the focus of the rules but as the rules are so general, as Lion Rampant, it is no problem to use them just as they are 200 years erlier, a man got to do what a man got to do to get a Swedish connection ;)

The Swedish colony was founded in 1650 by Hendrik Carloff in present-day Ghana in Africa. It lasted until April 1663 when the whole Swedish Gold Coast was seized by Denmark and integrated it in the Danish Gold Coast. 

...always the Danes, not even down in Africa they will let us Swedes work in peace... ;)

The colony consisted of only a few forts and trading posts i.e. factories, scattered around Cabo Corso in what later would become the British Gold Coast then Ghana. 

• Fort Carlsborg (also Carolusborg and Cape Coast Castle), present day Cape Coast, Central Region, under Swedish administration 22 April 1650 – January/February 1658, 10 December 1660 – 22 April 1663. 
• Fort William (also Annamabo), present day Anomabu, Central region, under Swedish administration 1650 – 1657 Fort Batenstein (also Batensteyn), present day Butri near Sekondi-Takoradi, Western region, under Swedish administration 1650 – 1656 
• Fort Christiansborg (also Fort Frederiksborg and Osu Castle), present day Osu, Ghana in Accra, headquarters, under Swedish administration 1652 – 1658 
• Fort Witsen (also Taccorari), present day Sekondi-Takoradi, Western region, under Swedish administration 1653 – 1658 
• Fort Apollonia, present day Beyin, Western region, under Swedish administration 1655 – 1657 
• Gemoree Factory 
• Accara Factory 

Each of the three Swedish administrators had a different title:

• Director: Hendrik Carloff, 22 April 1650 – 1656 
• Governor: Johan Filip von Krusenstierna (son of Philipp Crusius), 1656 – February 1658, 1659 – 1660 
• Commander: Tönnies Voss, 1660 – 22 April 1663 

Following the foundation of the Swedish Africa Company (1649) by Louis de Geer an expedition under the command of Hendrik Carloff was sent to Africa in 1650. Carloff made a treaty with the Akan King of Futu (also Feta) on selling some land by the coast. On 22 April 1650 the Swedish Gold Coast was founded and Carloff became its first administrator. In 1652 the foundations were laid of the fort Carlsborg.

In 1656 Johan Filip von Krusenstierna was appointed the new Governor. This enraged Carloff. He left Cabo Corso only to return on 27 January 1658 on the Danish Privateer Ship, Glückstadt. Fort Carlsborg was seized and made part of the Danish Gold Coast colony.

King Charles X Gustav of Sweden made this one of his reasons to go to war with Denmark. After the Treaty of Copenhagen in 1660 Cabo Corso Castle was to be returned to Swedish administration: However it then was revealed that Carloff's associate Samuel Schmidt or Smith had already sold the colony in April 1659 to the Dutch West India Company on his own, and had disappeared with the gold to Angola.

Later on the local population started a successful uprising against their new masters and in December 1660 the King of the Akan people subgroup-Efutu again offered Sweden control over the area. A new expedition was sent to the colony which remained under Swedish administration only for a short period. Von Krusenstierna was reappointed as administrator.

On 20 April 1663 Fort Carlsborg and the capital Fort Christiansborg again were seized by the Danes after a long defense under the Swedish commander Anton Voss.

On 9 May 1664 the area again was seized, this time by Robert Holmes who made it part of the British Gold Coast colony.

As inspiration for the project I have 4 Comic books published 1977-1982 "Johan Vilde" that tells the story about a young Swedish Ship-boy that end up in the Swedish Gold Coast, the books was only published in Swedish, sorry....

So now it is just to start to paint some minis...

As part of my "sell some of my minis" drive I have now come to my 28mm Late War Germans, should work as a platoon with support for Bolt Action or Chain of Command.

There are 30 of the minis from Artizan 12 and the Tankriders are from Black Tree or Bolt Action the Tank and 88 are from Black Tree.
