Battle at Fort St John September 1775

Last monday I at last had the possibility to continue my AWI scenarios down at the club. This was intended to be a 3 scenarios mini campaign but now we played it as a large game, played out on our 6x12 foot table.

This was a scenario inspired by the American attacks against the British held Fort St John in September 1775. Thanks AD for god inspiration !

The Attacking Americans were given 2 Brigades of each 3 regiments, 1 Light artillery piece and a small unit of riflemen. The American commander-in-chief Major-General Schyler was given Command rating 10 !!! but he was sik so the rating droped with 1 each turn untill it was down at 5 when he left over the overall command to Brigade-Generall Montgomery...

The British only had 2 foot regiments and 2 Medium artillery pieces in Fort St John, 3 small units of Canadian Gentlemen Volunteers and in Ambush by the small stream they had 4 small units of Woodland Indians.

The American had the initiative and ordered ther 2 Brigades to advance through the forest, the units forced to adopt skirmish formation...

We had a special rule saying that all formed units (american militia and english Line Infantry that moved through (almost all the table was covered with forest)had to adopt skirmish formation and reduce there stats (2 less attacks, 1 less Shooting and Stamina) as long as they continued to be in skirmish formation.... skirmisher may attack other skirmishers in close combat...bloodthirsty Indians...

The British sent out the Canadian Gentlemen Volunteers to support the Ambush from the Indians and to protect theirs right flank and occupie the small farm...

The front seen from the American side, the 2 American brigades advancing against the stream... Up to the right you can se the British Fort St John... In the middle on the far side of the stream you can see the Indians that have sprung their ambush and open fire on the advancinge 1st American Brigade...

The indians charged the american riflemen in the 1st American Brigade that was the first to try crosing the stream...

The Bloodthirsty Indians continued thire charge in to the vulnerable american milita in skirmish formation...

After a fearsome fight Brigade-Generall Montgomery militia troops in the 1st brigade managed to repulse the indian attack...

The 1st Brigade still in skirmish formation waiting on support fron the 2nd brigade that got stuck in the forest...

The battlefield seen from the british side...

Brigade-Generall Montgomery seize the initiative and sent one milita regiment over the stream with the order to advance fast to the small farm to get there before the Canadian Gentlemen Volunteers...

The American regiment managed to get to the farm first and formed a line in the field before they made a glorius bayonet charge...scattering the 2 units of Canadian Gentlemen Volunteers

With the right flank threaten the Indians started to withdraw in to the forest...The serst of the American 1st Brigade started to move over the stream and on to the farm, folowing theirs 1st Regiment leading the way...

The 2nd American Brigade managed at last to cross the stream...

The last group of Canadian Gentlemen Volunteers waiting to retaliate on the advancing Americans...

Woodland indians hiding in the forest...waiting to get in the fight again...

American 1st Brigade runing thouth the farm...

By some strange reason one of the British Line Regiment advancing out
of the protection of the fort...

Heroic American Militia Regiment of the 1st Brigade...

1st American brigade advancing against the Fort...

BUT the indians in the forest sneake up from behind...

The last picture showing the Indians sneaky attack...the american respons was a comand blunder:) forsing the entire brigade to make a double retreate away from the enemy...forcing them trouth a small stream and to adopt skirmish formation... The Indians explored this opportunety and charged them, manage to whipe out the entire 1st American Brigade in the following hand to hand fight...

We endend the game after this fight and about 3 houres of gaming... The British had managed to stop the American advance on Fort St John...

Thanks Stewe for all the pictures from the game:)
